Music Around Town ~ May 21- 27, 2012
Check it out! Tonight MinglewoodTavern AtLat Live Dead Tribute Band….with this line up it’s gonna be good. Members Dan King, Pete Dennesen, Peter Koeplin, Sean Kelleher, John Cameron, Kim Trigilio…..Another new one for me. Love it!
‘The Conservatory’ at The Cape Ann (“The Annie”) is a no-cost professional arts training program for Cape Ann youth, ages 13-21, bridging them to adult mentors who are working in the fields of theatre, dance, music, poetry, comedy, design and tech. ‘The UnAdulterated Cabaret’ is their debut performance project. It opens tonight and runs every Sunday night, year-round. You’ll be blown away!
Check out Gloucester’s newest band to hit the music circuit. Hear songs by Tom Petty, J Geils, Stones, CCR, Tracy Chapman and some mighty fine originals. Who knows you might even hear a hot blues tune thrown in there.
This Friday ~ Continuing their summer Defroster of Gloucester, Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents return to The Madfish Grille in Gloucester with three sets of nonstop (OK, a couple of stops) rock, soul and girl group sounds.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave says,
Omigod, my computer’s a mess . I just wrote a mighty missive and the god of wrath decided it’s a no-go. I gotta start again.
Our semi-annual dismembership drive begins this week with the return of that tootin’; Torquemada of the tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. One of my personal faves, this guy plays Sax, sings and just plain drives me out of my mind. And he’s the keeper of the blowtorch, too. Old blues, important old songs, irrelevant new songs, this guy always keeps me guessing. He’s really big in Sweden, too, where he travels often to spread the word and eat a few meatballs on his way out. He drives a Volvo with all the safety features removed. If you miss this, you’ll be sorry.
And let’s welcome a new drummbler: Mr. Seth Pappas, Milt’s brother, who will regale you with all kinds of dive bombing bombast behind his seat of government. haven’t seen him in a while since he chose to be a scientist instead of a necromancer. He will make you reset your Rolex.
And don’t forget Greg Tee and his pine box, made to his specifications, and mee, two, on bass and treble, all in the city of fine music. Gonna be a scream! Floss them fangs and c’mon down!

If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool.
Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing. Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave says,
We’re continuing with our medulla oblongation ceremonies this week as we welcome back Mr. Justin Quinn and his band of reknown. Mr. J has been busy whipping us into shape for this ecstatic experience by having us black him up at Glenn’s in Nbpt. last Sunday. We’re all rarin’ to go. Upbeat or beat up, we’ll do it all!
Beside Justin, on the harp and vocals, You’ll be enjoying Mr. Jon Ross on Qatar. John’s one of those musical millipedes who can play anything with strings. This time it’s a 60 year old relic of a catarrh held together with duct tape and a strong belt of scotch.
We’ve got the dynamo of drums, too, in the human form of that sartorially challenged Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. He’s been eating his Wheaties® and appears to be ready to run right out of the box.
Of course, Mr. Gee Tee will be there with his goiter and hat, and me too, on the grasshopper bass. A night to remember, without the iceberg and wet underwear. Bring your own Feenamint©!

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave Says,
This is a really big week , and I know you’re all quivering with anticipation, so let’s get down on it!
This Thursday at the Rhumb Line, Dave Sag’s Blooz Bash® features the inimitable “Geezerz©”. Long a mystery in these parts, these four hoarsemen are gathering under the head of steam created by the bloated full moon of last week, and expanding to enfold you in their lovin’ arms. For those of you who have been busy rearranging the furniture in your closets, said Geegerz consists of Dave Brown, systolic sliiideman and all-around guitarrh guru, David Mattacks, the atomic clock, on skins, Greg Tower, catarrh man,on haberdashery, and myself, Dave Sag, on base. Haven’t seen these guys in a while and I’m really looking forward to this, cuz my eyes are in the front of my head.
And Sunday, I’ll be up at Glenn’s, once again, with the Justin Quinn Band, but don’t worry, you who live in fear won’t be there…gotta cross the bridge…yada yada yada. Too bad: it’s a great club and the food is awesome! It’s 6 to 9. You can get 10 to life if you’re not careful.
And Monday, for those of you who have chosen a disabled , retired or unemployed lifestyle, why not come down to the Rose Baker Senior
Center before your nap for a rousing jazz encounter with the Good Old Salty Jazz Band? Honestly, these guys have more energy than most of you think. It’s a local, nay! national treasure and bears scrutiny. All you fancy dancers got nothing on the gliding grandparents on the dance floor. We’re there 1 to 3 p.m. Bring smelling salts? depends….

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave says,
Well, we’ve got repeat offenders this Thursday at the Rhumba Line, so let’s welcome back that notorious nabob of the saxophone: Mr. Marque Earley. He’s been busy scrounging $50 gigs everywhere, so I’m more than happy to help him out. This cat is so fear-inspiring that everybody but me is afraid of him and his metamucilical stylings. So, I’m bringing in the heavy guns in the form of Mr. Pall Foss, old college chum and recipient of the Bob Mobilio Award for excellence in the field of musical theory. He’s driving down from Bangor, Maine. I hope he can find the place. If he mows down a deer on the way down, we won’t go hungry. We’re gonna play the new stuff. Paul’s a quick-draw pianist and polka wizard, known far and wide for his ability to laugh at anything, anywhere, anytime. You need this.
Following the proceeding will be one of my favorite drumbalists: Mr. Forrest “Gump” Padgett, king of the wild frontier. Solid as a rock, and twice as heavy. Of course, Mr. Greg T. and myself complete the roundup. Come early for free polka lessons. Kielbasa tasting party starts at 9 P.M. Who loves ya, baby!

Mondays – 6:00 to 8:00 ~ Chantey Night, an open Monday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the Cape Ann Brewing Company to the Dog Bar . The singing begins at 6:00 every Monday night. For all the schooner heads this is quite a thing to see. If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool.
Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing. Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

It’s Ragnarock ’n’ Roll time this week as we welcome back the happiest guy I know: Mr. Orville Giddings. Guffawing glitarist, landscraper and talented songwriter/ singer, this guy always brightens up my day. His 1000 watt smile always makes me wish I was wearing welding goggles! It’s always an honor to have him play with us. Hope I can remember his songs!
He’ll be backed up by another fine giggler, Mr. Steve Chaggaris on the skins. He’s the Kojak of the kit. Who loves ya, baby? Always muttering and tee-heeing profusely. Of course, Mr. Greg T. with his flower pot hat and myself on base will be there, too, just in case. A fine night for anything remotely connected with the itmosphere! See you there!

This is so exciting….I met Kingsley Flood a couple of years ago or more at a Monday night open jam and fell in love with them. You can catch George Hall a psychedelic to the moon guitar at the jam most Monday nights. He is a treat to hear as always.

Boston based rockers Kingsley Flood are “Having Words With Meg” on national Sirius XM Radio.
With an upcoming Gloucester gig June 2 gig at The Madfish on Rocky Neck and their recent 2nd release “Colder Still”, these upstarts revvv things up with their own gumbo of Punk Americana..and everything from the Sax to the Fiddle to the Coffee Can are part of the sound. Band member George Hall hails from Gloucester…And they’ll throw in a Tom Waits cover for good measure.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave says,
The Vernon Dent Foundation is proud to present that capacious yet lovable yeti of the blues: Mr. Mike O’Connell. It’s his very own show at the Rhumb Line this week. Chef, glitarist, and Vasorect® spokesmodel, he’s got a voice smooth as baby’s feet. He mows lawns, too. Mikey’s been brewing a lot of tea lately, as the chief mogul of the Teahouse of the something or other in Snakepit, Ma. Food’s really good, especially the kapusta fondue. Bring a date and dine by the whites of her eyes!
We’ll be tapping our bunions along with that first-rate drumambulist Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, the Ace of Pace. Haven’t seen him in a while since he hurt himself in that horrible kick drum accident, But I guess he’s doing well. Of course, Mr. Greg T. with his catarrh will be there as well as myself in the bassment, trying to hold things up. A swell night for aural sex!

Hello everyone!
Wednesday, April 4th
This week:
Pictured here from the cover of her latest release, “Frail to
Fearless”, Katrin Roush – known simply as Katrin) is among
the very best of my best all-time Rhumb Line guests. This
brand-new disc was masterfully produced by my good friend
and former bandmate Jerry Marotta (Orleans, Peter Gabriel,
Paul McCartney, many others) and offers a number of
compelling new “Katrinsongs” – many of which she plans to
feature this Wednesday for our intimate Gloucester forum.
Katrin is a serious artist who has carried her music and her
message around the world and back again. How lucky we
now are to have her among us! ~ Fly

Dave Says,
The Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world this year and many doomsayers are warning of the coming apocalypse. I say; 666, come and get me. But let me take a shower and get dressed first. We’ve got our own version of the abruptment this week and we’re calling it ” The Rupture”. Yes, yes, we’re splitting our guts out to you the viewers, so you can see what the big deal is all about. Thank Iblis no-one understands me!
In honor of this solemn occasion , we’re proud to present the commodious Mr.Steve Sadler to our tiny stage this week. Stee-Vee is prodigious composer, recording studio genius, glitarist and star vogelsang. You may remember him from the days of that locally favorite band: The Barking Sharks. Steve is one of our faves, always ready with a snappy tune or a hip joke. We’ll be bending the floorboards all night long till Fred cries “Uncle!”
Holding up the universe will be that loincloth-clad hero: Mr. Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer and plumbing magnate, on eggbeaters. Of course, Mr. Greg T. on catarrh, and myself, on base, complete the madness. Don’t be L-seven, come and learn to dance!

Cape Ann Brewing ~ http://www.capeannbrewing.com/
Chantey Night, an open Tuesday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the now-closed Cameron’s to the Cape Ann Brewing Company. The singing begins at 8:30 every Tuesday night.

David Borden’s “Moog: The Man I Knew
and the Machine I Learned”
FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Details
When the legendary Robert Moog introduced David Borden to his voltage-controlled electronic synthesizer, the groundbreaking experimentation and creative performances of Borden’s band, Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Co., echoed throughout music history for decades to come. Join Borden as he tells tales of Moog’s revolutionary inventions—the Moog Voyager and MiniMoog—and of his collaborations with celebrated minimalist
musicians like John Cage, Wendy Carlos, and Keith Emerson. Following his talk, Borden will perform his own composition, Easter–for Digital Audio File and Moog Soloist.
David Borden is one of America’s most accomplished classical minimalist/post-minimalist composers. His band, Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Co., experimented with electronic synthesizers earning them a place in history alongside such pioneers as Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and Tangerine Dream.
David Borden’s “Mother Mallard turns out some of the best synthesizer music around.”
