Tuesday - 7:00pm until 10:00pm
Please join us to celebrate the release of Chelsea Berry’s newest full length album, “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”.
The new record is “energetic and wild and has its moments of epic orchestration while the lyrics send the message of the story of human struggle and love and loss and all that stuff I love to write about and people can relate to.
I am really excited about this album because it’s going to be a whole new side of the music- and a whole new side of me. Growing and changing and not being afraid to leave it all out there– without losing that familiarity and approachability that’s so central to me as a performer.”
The CD will be available for purchase and there may even be a couple of impromptu performances.
Also, on Friday and Saturday, Febraury 8th and 9th, Chelsea and her spectacular group of players will perform at The Shalin Liu Performance Center. There are still some tickets left for Friday night’s performance. Don’t miss it!

This has to be one of the funniest messages yet.
From Dave himself,
This thursday’s Rumline show features our own homegroan musical prodigy, Mr. Dave Brown, the systolic Svengali of sliiide glitarrh. Always a pleasure. He’s bringing his entire bungee cord collection, too. Unfortuately his (and our) companion zygote Mr. Dave Mattacks had to cancel after suffering setbacks from some elective surgery. Luckily, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, with the napalmolive hairdo, is ready to fill some mighty big shoes. Look for him on the eggbeaters, cackling away. As usual, Greg T. and myself fill out the waistline.

Chantey Night, an open Tuesday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the now-closed Cameron’s to the Cape Ann Brewing Company. The singing begins at 8:30 every Tuesday night. For all the schooner heads this is quite a thing to see. If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool.
Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing. Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA:
BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY NO. 9 (HD BROADCAST)
Monday, May 23, 8PM
Composed a century apart, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony both share a sense of pushing the symphonic genre into new areas, in both cases partly through the inclusion of chorus. But while Beethoven’s final work in the genre bears an outwardly “symphonic” structure–four movements and a big finale–Stravinsky’s from 1930 feels more oratorio-like. “It is not a symphony in which I have included Psalms to be sung,” Stravinsky said. “On the contrary, it is the singing of the Psalms that I am symphonizing.” In any event Stravinsky’s finale, “Alleluia-Laudate Dominum” delves the same celebratory spirit that made Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” an unprecedented expression of ecstasy in 1824. Maestro Dutoit is joined in this ingenious pairing by renowned soloists and the Philadelphia Singers Chorale.

Coffee House at St. John’s Episcopal Church Gloucester
Friday, May 13 at 7:00 pm. Featuring Gary Backstrom
Gloucester, MA – St. John’s Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, and Gloucester is holding a Coffee house on Friday, May 13 at 7:00 pm. Coffee and Tea will be available for purchase. Admission is free provided attendees bring canned goods or make a free will donation to the Cape Ann Food Pantry.
Renowned local guitarist Gary Backstrom spent over 12 years in the Boston based jam band Jiggle The Handle. He currently fronts The Gary Backstrom Band plus Road To Utopia – a Todd Rundgren tribute band. Don’t miss seeing Gary; even in an intimate acoustic setting he will rock your socks off.
“I’ve seen Gary about a dozen times the past 6 years and what amazes me is how he never does the same set twice. It is always a new and rewarding experience to hear him play. A unique part of this Friday’s event will be the “open mic” session. We are hoping folks will come and spontaneously share their performing skills whether it be singing, storytelling or poetry.” – Jim LaBelle
The Coffee House is open to the public. People attending are asked to bring canned food items or make a free will donation to the Open Door (the Cape Ann Food Pantry). For more information please call Jim LaBelle at 978-828-0055.
St. John’s Episcopal Church Gloucester was founded in 1863 and will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2013. It is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and is proud of its commitment to the spiritual growth and to the social justice needs of the residents of Cape Ann. www.stjohnsgloucester.org.

At the Shalin Liu Performance Center the Lorelei Ensemble will be premiering five new settings of “Dona Nobins Pacem” (Grant Us Peace). Dedicated to the expansion of repertoire for women’s voices, this choral ensemble of eight women, works to expose audiences to lesser-known music from the Medieval through Baroque periods as well as works by living composers.

pApAs fritAs (10:15pm)
The Bandit Kings (11:30pm)
pApAs fritAs is kicking off their European tour with their first gig since 2003 at The Rhumb Line on Thursday, May 19th starting at 9pm and accompanied by The BF’s and The Bandit Kings. (Thanks to Dave Sag for giving up one of his fantastic Thursday night slots to allow the band a hometown show!) The Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona has invited pApAs fritAs to reunite this year for their 50,000+ attendee festival, which will be preceded by shows in Brussels, Paris, and Marseilles. Two of their three albums (on Minty Fresh Records, Chicago) were recorded in West Gloucester, so after six European tours, two Japanese tours, countless cross-U.S. tours, and ten years…it’s fitting for the band to reunite here in Gloucester. The band will be playing with Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents the next day (Friday, May 20th) at Harpoon Fest (at the Harpoon Brewery in Boston), as well, before departing for Europe.
General Admission: $15, $5 for students and youth 18 and under. 978-546-7391 or http://www.rockportmusic.org

Best known for “Dance With Me” and “Still the One,” Orleans has more than earned its place in American pop culture history, and continues to sound better than ever. The Orleans Trio, with original members Lance and Larry (lead voice on ALL the hits) Hoppen, plus Dennis “Fly” Amero is an intimate, “unplugged” version of this prestigious and legendary group. Their vibrant harmonies, deep/broad catalog of classics and impressive NEW tunes, along with signature guitar work are proof that Orleans, in any configuration, is indeed “STILL THE ONE” and “STILL HAVIN’ FUN”! Jalapenos Benefit Featuring LIVE MUSIC by ColdStream May 2, 2011
Hi Joey,
My husband and I subscribe to Good Morning Gloucester – it has really helped us get acclimated to the area. Thank you! Love your pics and updates.
I am a repeat Breast Cancer 3 Day walker – I have walked the 60 miles in Boston in July of 2009 & 10 and I am now preparing for the July 2011 walk. I will be doing a benefit at Jalapenos on Monday evening, May 2. We will have live music from 6:30-9 pm by ColdStream. I was wondering if you might add this event to your live music section? As you probably know, Jalapenos donates 10% of their proceeds from these benefits, which is very generous!
Monday, May 2 – Jalapenos Benefit Featuring LIVE MUSIC by ColdStream – a 4 piece acoustic band made up of 2 guitarists, a bass player and a mandolin player. They specialize in three and four part harmonies. Their music ranges from soft rock to pop, soul, Irish, Americana, country, English folk and classic rock. They are a staple in the southern New Hampshire restaurant circuit playing to warm receptions everywhere. 6:30 – 9 pm
Thanks for any shout out you can provide. If you have other promotional ideas, please let me know!
Best,
Liz Dooley

The Orleans Trio
Best known for “Dance With Me” and “Still the One,” Orleans has more than earned its place in American pop culture history, and continues to sound better than ever. The Orleans Trio, with original members Lance and Larry (lead voice on ALL the hits) Hoppen, plus Dennis “Fly” Amero is an intimate, “unplugged” version of this prestigious and legendary group. Cape Ann Brewing ~ http://www.capeannbrewing.com/

From GoodMorningGloucester
Hi Joey,
My husband and I subscribe to Good Morning Gloucester – it has really helped us get acclimated to the area.
Best,
Liz Dooley

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party -

This thursday at the Rhumb Line, Fred is proud to present John Keegan®, martini expert, and leader of men. Best known for leading “Madhouse” over any musical cliff he encounters, Johnny K. is the MAN, pure and simple. He’ll be bringing his ants with him, and we’ll be crawling all over you!
Side effects include the apoplectic John Hyde, jazz snob and loving husband, on Keyboards and beret, the inimitable Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer, on skins and plumbing advice, and of course, Greg T. and Myself. Do not drive until you know how John Keegan® affects you.
Now, Monday, for those of you who the Republicans blame for not working, C’mon down to the Rose Baker Senior Center. From 1 to 3 in the afternoon, the OLD SALTY JAZZ BAND does its thing. It’s FREE! We play music written for the Pharoahs and beyond. We’ll never give up! It’s a blast! We’ve got Charlie Sheen in a cage! He really doesn’t have a problem…honest!
But, wait, there’s more! Next Tuesday nite is Fat Tuesday, and to celebrate Mardi Gras, Lat 43 has hired yours truly with my band of brothers to cerebrate the onset of Lent. I’m giving up olives. The band consists of Gid Loring, walking encyclopedia of swing (and Trad jazz) on Trumpet and vocals, Frank Stadler, on Keys, John Hicks, on Guitar, vocals and banjo, Benny Goldstein, on reeds and myself, on bass and vocals. Come see why I drink! They won’t let me name the band! Who could blame them! Mark Earley was gonna play, but he’s got all these chicken parts clogging up his horn. So he’s on the DL. We don’t need him!

Allen Estes

Peter Van Ness
Allen’s first guest is the show’s co-producer, Peter Van Ness, co-founder gimmesound.com & Celebrate Gloucester.
The premiere show features three songs by Allen Estes, two of which do not appear on any CD. The original premiere, scheduled for December 1 at 6:30pm, was thwarted by a cape-wide blackout. You can see the premiere on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 on Friday, December 3rd at 1pm and Sunday, December 5th at 6pm. It will air again on Wednesday, December 8th at 6:30pm. Check schedule for more air times. After shows air, you will be able to see archives on this website.
Allen and his guests have fun with lively dialogue exploring creativity, songwriting and the music business.
Shows are taped before a live studio audience.
If you would like to be in the studio audience or you’d like to be Allen’s guest on a future show — or if you have an idea for a guest or questions to ask or topics to cover, please complete the form below and someone will get in touch with you.
Congratulations To Local Music Acts Taking Home Boston Music Awards Honors!!!
As seen on GoodMornigGloucester
Hi Joey,
I love your blog!
I don’t know if this is of interest to you but thought I’d try.
George Hall, a Gloucester resident and guitar-playing fixture at the Rhumbline, is the lead guitarist for Kingsley Flood. The band just performed at the Boston Music Awards last night and took home the Boston Music Award for “Best New Artist of the Year”. I don’t know if you’ve caught them live but they play at the Rhumbline frequently, when they’re not travelling up and down the east coast. In fact, the Rhumbline holds a special place in their heart…they love the crowd there. Their CD “Dust Windows” topped the Amazon charts for quite some time as well. Check them out!
Also, Jen D’Angora of Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents won “Best Female Vocalist of the Year.” Tony Goddess of Gloucester is a guitarist with the band and his wife Sam Goddess is a back-up vocalist.
The awards were held at the Liberty Hotel in Boston and it was a sold-out event.
All around, a good night for recognizing some home-grown talent.
Thanks.
Gregg Z.

Erin Harpe and The Delta Swingers are going to the International Blues Challenge 2010 in Memphis.
Erin Harpe and The Delta Swingers won the blues challenge at Johnny D’s. They’re going to Memphis along with the duo act Cindy Daily and Satch Romano. I heard a new band there “ThrowDown” and man they were wild, wild enough to get me on the dance floor. Thank you Gracie for joining me. All the bands were great and I know it had to have been a wicked hard decision to make. Blues like I like it. Thank you all!
Congratulations to Erin Harpe and The Delta Swingers and Driving Blind for winning the first round. It was an excellent night of music five bands playing all types of blues. Second round goes to Gracie Curran and the High Falutin Band and The Throwdown Blues Band. The Lois Greco Band will be in the last day of competitions as well. I am so looking forward to this.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party with special guest
From Mr Dave Sags,
OH, come all ye faithful… the Christmas Tree is lit (so is the band) and it’s counting down to that last green light of that quarter-mile.When it hits, you’re bound to quake, as the slicks screech and the hammer hangs and dem ol’ reindeer take off, hooves a-popping, bells a-rattling, ears a-ringin’ to that V-8 heat that can’t be beat. It’s Christmas time, pretty baby and to get all your noses turning red, we got the Queen of the north, Ms. Lisa Marie. She’s got the reins and the leadfoot to get ya where ya gotta go. We’ve purposely cut the brake lines for this one special performance. Hear her sing such xmas faves as “Santa’s got a lawyer” , ” Who left the grate closed?”, and “I saw Daddy kissing Santa Claus”. It’s sure to be the high point of any dead Christian’s holiday.
We got reindeer, too! The famous finger-flailer, John “Prancer” Cameron will be on the ivories. And citizen and weekend father, Mr. Steevie “Vixen” Chaggaris, will be on the egg-beaters whilst sitting on hiz own stool. Of course, Mr. Greg “Rudolph” Tee and myself will be there, too, drinking eggnog and Alka-Seltzer. Ask your doctor if Lisa Marie is right for you. Don’t look for premiums, as the cost of the finest precludes the use if them.
But, seriously, folks, Greg and I would like to thank each and every one of you who have helped to make this past year a little bit brighter. Without you, we’d be nothing. You have helped to make my Days sunnier! So, Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings, Shalom, Kwanza, whatever, but have a merry! And, remember: live music is best!!

Music Around Town ~ November 15 – 21, 2010
This seARTS benefit will showcase the diverse voice of the guitar as a performance instrument. Audiences will be delighted to hear the depth and range of American fingerstyle guitar, and connect to the narration and warmth of the performers. The diversity of the performances is inspiring, as Bonfield, Coryell, and Davison pick their way through music ranging from country blues, ragtime and folk, to traditional Celtic, jazz, and classical pieces. The show carries audience members on an auditory and educational tour of the guitar that is both inspiring for aficionados and guitarists and approachable for newcomers to finger style guitar. Larry Coryell is one of the world’s acknowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing”, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine. Ken Bonfield has toured nationally since 1994, has released 5 solo albums and 2 duo albums with violinist Joe Ebel, Steve Davison released his national debut “White River Suite” in 2010. Together, Bonfield and Davison are touring with Artistry of the Guitar.
Program Notes
Coriolan Overture
Beethoven wrote this highly popular composition in 1807 to accompany Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s now obscure drama. The music depicts the story of Coriolanus, a banished Roman patrician who shamefully and tragically leads an army against Mother Rome. As one of Beethoven’s most performed and recorded works, the overture has far outpaced its literary counterpart in fame and acclaim.
Piano Concerto No. 2
It is fitting, perhaps, for young Kadar Qian to be performing Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto as it is the youthful work of a great pianist who was himself a prodigy. Chopin, born in Poland of French parents, began performing in public when he was 8 years old. Composed when he was 20, Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually Chopin’s first. It was labeled the second because it was the second to be published. The music itself is magically expressive and typical of Chopin.
Symphony No. 4 in A (Italian Symphony)
Mendelssohn spent the years 1829 -1831 touring Europe which provided the inspiration for his Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides, and of course the Italian Symphony. Writing from Rome to his equally musical sister Fanny about his work in progress, he said “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done.” Indeed it is a sunny work and evocative of the magical spirit of Italy.
