Music Around Town ~ October 11-17, 2010

Dan King and KBMG (King, Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks, Wolf Ginandes) will play the Dogbar in downtown Gloucester on Friday, October 15. KBMG welcomes guest artist Brandi Emma, who will play the first set of the evening.

ABOUT THE BAND: KBMG are a serious, thought provoking, veteran Folk Rock Band who’s members have recorded and performed with the most successful (critical and chart topping), names in rock, folk and country music, including: Paul McCartney, Fairport Convention, Simon and Garfunkel, George Harrison, Roseanne Cash, Julian Lennon, Billy Joel, Elton John, Richard Thompson, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Jethro Tull, and many more. Lead by timeless songwriter Dan King, KBMG generate a musical engine that can scream and purr with a dynamic range of song and lyric. These four gentlemen have seen the bars, coffeehouses, clubs, stadiums, fairs, top studio sessions and theaters over their extensive careers in the music business; they continue to be in-demand live and recording studio musicians today. Their recordings and live experiences have grown into a relationship that DM describes as “not just four great musicians playing together but a real band with a strong and moving sound.” (www.danielscottking.com)

DAVID BROWN (dobro, electric guitar): David Brown‘s ten-year stint in the 80s during Billy Joel’s heyday brought him round the globe many times over, a wall of gold and platinum and the experience of being in the top Billboard recording group for the decade.

DAVE MATTACKS (drums): Dave Mattacks has a discography that reads like a who’s who of folk, rock and pop.   DM continues to enjoy accolades with Fairport Convention (Fairport’s Liege and Lief voted greatest folk rock album ever), which only solidifies his already legendary status. He also continues to tour currently in the drum seat with Roseanne Cash and many others.

WOLF GINANDES (bass): It’s safe to say that bassist Wolf Ginandes’ status around Boston has been elevated to Guru. Ginandes is the master of groove and feel for KBMG.  With a deep knowledge of how things work, Ginandes is also an expert guitar and bass maker, and restorer with over 20 years experience at the Berklee Musical Instruments service center.

DAN KING(singer/songwriter, guitar): Bringing all this talent together is master singer/songwriter Dan King, who became friends with these legendary, professional musicians after working with them on his many solo and live albums. The chemistry worked and King’s songs won their hearts.  They saw his music as something special and worth standing behind as personified in their latest release, Western Color.

SPECIAL GUEST, BRANDI EMMA (singer/songwriter): Originally from Massachusetts, Emma now lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and is touring in support of her forthcoming EP Photographic Memory (brandiemma.com). Jason Lent had this to say about Emma’s music: “Minimal arrangements adorn the songs…[and] Emma’s voice has the power to still a chatty coffee shop and enough depth to color the emotional spectrum. ‘Every day is right as rain/until you come home drunk again’ sets the mood on ‘Let It Go’ and Emma’s voice edges close to breaking as she sorts out her heart.

Thursday – 8:30 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party

From Mr Dave Sags,
We’ve successfully petitioned the Aesir who have graciously consented to lend us Mr. Steve Sadler for one night. So, I’m driving to Bifrost and picking him up at the Midgard station and dumping him off at the Rhumbline, where he belongs. Steve is the multi-incrementalist genius of many genres  who always throws us for a loop. Look for tricksters hiding in the corner of your eyes.
Knocking him out of the park will be that teachin’  fool, Mr. Roger Brocklebank, Madhouse swordsman and hollow leg acolyte. He’s pissed that his wife recieved a pix of Bret Favre’s unit on her IPhone. Would’nt you? Greg T. will be there. too as well as meself. don’t come and be damned.

Topside Grille –  Events  ~ http://www.topsidegrill.com/index.php?link=events

Friday October 15,  Samantha Farrell:

If I had to describe her, I’d say she was a mix between Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Samantha Farrell is a sparkling young singer-songwriter based out of Boston, who has been wowing critics and audiences alike, across the country with her unique mixture of jazz and folk-rock influenced  pop.  Described by national music magazine Relix as possessing “prodigious and undulating vocals that are delivered with rare, swinging passion,” and as a “soulful mix of Van Morrison’s country hospitality, Ella Fitzgerald’s jazzy range and Fiona Apple’s modern honesty,” Farrell has been touring the North east in support of her latest two efforts; Her full length album “Luminous” was produced by the late LeRoi Moore, a founding member and saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band. “Luminous,” a completely independent release, sky rocketed to #7 on the national pop iTunes charts from it’s formidable grass roots support. Her music has been heard on major network television shows such as “Shark” (NBC), Privileged and One Tree Hill (CW). For more information, find her on the web at www.samanthafarrell.com

This seARTS benefit will showcase the diverse voice of the guitar as a performance instrument.  Audiences will be delighted to hear the depth and range of American fingerstyle guitar, and connect to the narration and warmth of the performers.  The diversity of the performances is inspiring, as Bonfield, Coryell, and Davison pick their way through music ranging from country blues, ragtime and folk, to traditional Celtic, jazz, and classical pieces.  The show carries audience members on an auditory and educational tour of the guitar that is both inspiring for aficionados and guitarists and approachable for newcomers to finger style guitar. Larry Coryell is one of the world’s acknowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing”, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine. Ken Bonfield has toured nationally since 1994, has released 5 solo albums and 2 duo albums with violinist Joe Ebel, Steve Davison released his national debut “White River Suite” in 2010. Together, Bonfield and Davison are touring with Artistry of the Guitar.

Program Notes

Coriolan Overture
Beethoven wrote this highly popular composition in 1807 to accompany Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s now obscure drama.  The music depicts the story of Coriolanus, a banished Roman patrician who shamefully and tragically leads an army against Mother Rome.  As one of Beethoven’s most performed and recorded works, the overture has far outpaced its literary counterpart in fame and acclaim.

Piano Concerto No. 2
It is fitting, perhaps, for young Kadar Qian to be performing Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto as it is the youthful work of a great pianist who was himself a prodigy.  Chopin, born in Poland of French parents, began performing in public when he was 8 years old.  Composed when he was 20, Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually Chopin’s first.  It was labeled the second because it was the second to be published.  The music itself is magically expressive and typical of Chopin.

Symphony No. 4 in A (Italian Symphony)
Mendelssohn spent the years 1829 -1831 touring Europe which provided the inspiration for his Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides, and of course the Italian Symphony.    Writing from Rome to his equally musical sister Fanny about his work in progress, he said “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done.”  Indeed it is a sunny work and evocative of the magical spirit of Italy.
