Saturday-9pm ~Brian Jarvis Trio

Connecticut-based musician, Brian Jarvis, brings his trio to Machaca this Saturday night for what promises to be an amazing night of music. ABOUT Brian Jarvis: New England singer/songwriter Brian Jarvis entices listeners with a captivating honesty and a voice drawing comparisons to David Gray and Matt Nathanson. For the past 6 years Jarvis has been on the road touring the country supporting several well-known acts within the Singer-Songwriter genre. 2019 marks the triumphant return with his first new EP “Anyone at All”. The 5 song EP features collaborations with some of Connecticut’s finest including the song “I’m Your Man” which was co-written with Stephen Kellogg. Teaming up with long time drummer and producer Rob Griffith from Bronze Radio Return, Jarvis is set to release his first new collection of songs in the spring of 2019. “The songs as a whole tackle more introspective themes and have been well received on the road, which is very rewarding and exciting.” said Jarvis about the new modern sound. Spending most of 2017 & 2018 on the road with hit songwriter Howie Day, Jarvis is ready to hit the ground running with long awaited follow up to his debut album “Beautifully Broken” which debuted in the iTunes Rock 100 back when downloads were a thing!

MARGARET ATWOOD: LIVE IN CINEMAS

On Tuesday, September 10th, the wait will be over….The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor.

The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award-winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights and a protest against misogyny and oppression. Live from the London stage, Atwood will be interviewed by broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’

With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable and intimate event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect. The Testaments will be published by Vintage on 10 September.

7 guys. Multiple ways of making music using only their voices. What they do is far more than a cappella. They are a band without a band.

Having met in school and gospel choir they quickly discovered that they were doing more than just singing songs, they all discovered perfect hypervocal capabilities. That’s why Naturally 7 call their music “vocal play.” Every band member has his preferred style, or favorite songs and together they can interpret them all. Naturally 7 summon up soul, rap, rock and folk in one harmonious balance.

“Naturally 7 croons like a choir of angels, but they can also simulate a full orchestra or a pop-rock band…using just their voices.”

Nowadays they have famous fans such as Michael Bublé (whom they joined on 3 world tours), Coldpay (“Fix You” is one of the finest adaptions of music you can imagine), Quincy Jones (who called them “best a cappella band worldwide”), Herbie Hancock (listen to their H. Hancock medley) and many others.

Their repertoire is a mix of their own compositions and cover versions.

This year they are celebrating their 20th anniversary which will be accompanied by new releases and remixes of famous hits (such as “Wall of Sound”). They happily participated in CBS’ new TV format World’s Best which will air from February to April 2019. And of course: they tour around the world!

https://rockportmusic.org/reimagining-flamenco/   Grisha Goryachev, guitar | Serouj Kradjian, piano | Chee-Yun, violin | Daniela Mack, mezzo-soprano | Jeffrey Beecher, bass | Jamey Haddad, percussion | Liam Smith, percussion

This all-star cast of musicians bring Reimagining Flamenco to Rockport—a unique opportunity to hear the flamenco-inspired music of Manuel de Falla as well as classically-flavored reinventions of guitar and piano pieces by the old flamenco masters. Kradjian describes the program as, “…(a) rare collaboration of flamenco guitar and piano takes the music of Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albeniz back to their roots, imaginatively reconstructing the route these composers took in composing their masterpieces.”

JAZZ DINNER FEATURING THE JAZZ IMPOSTERS Tuesday, July 9, 2019 7:00 PM 9:30 PM The Jazz Imposters aka Rik the Meanie, is an experimental band originated by Rockport High School senior Jackson Renda and recently graduated Rowan Rockwell. After releasing there debut EP, Laizze Faire, on SoundCloud, The Jazz Imposters have gained a following through out the Cape Ann and Boston Area. The Jazz Imposters take influence from Fela Kuti, Mac Demarco, The Wutang Clan, Wilco, among others. As the band continues to thrive, Saxophonist Francis Altman, Bassist Noel Rudloff and Guitarist Matt Rich are now regular members of the Imposters.

Come take a seat,

Your entertainment,

our treat

Our sights are delights

And our sound you can’t beat

It’s in between jazz

But you can still tap your feet

To something not quite like blues

But it will still shake your shoes

It’s hard to describe

But if you come we can try

So come take a glide

On our mothership ride

JAZZ BRUNCH FEATURING STEVE LACEY Sunday, July 14, 2019 10:30 AM 2:30 PM We are thrilled to announce the return of NYC jazz guitarist, Steve Lacey. Harry and The Potters

Friday, June 21st at 7pm

Sawyer Free Library

Harry and the Potters.  They’ve been around for a while (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_and_the_Potters), and they basically started what people now call ‘Wizard Rock’.  They recorded their latest album last summer with Tony at Bang-A-Song Studios, and loved the town and everything so much that they’re kicking off their tour here with a free show at the Sawyer Free Library next Friday, June 21st at 7pm (which they announced in Rolling Stone).

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/harry-and-the-potters-lumos-829736/

Because they write and perform songs about books (The Harry Potter series), they’re doing all sixty dates at libraries (https://www.harryandthepotters.com/shows).

ANYHOW, the library just got permission to have the show outside, and we really want people to come out and enjoy it.  I know Joey loves it when non-local people give it up for Gloucester, and these guys are definitely in that camp.  So, I’m hoping you can help me spread the word.  I don’t know how best to help (I’ve got a press kit with posters, press pics, etc.) and I feel certain the guys would do any kind of interview/promo that you or Joey would suggest.  Basically…I’m throwing it out there.  Whaddaya think?  We’re just really excited they’re coming!

The Herland Brothers are an acclaimed country rock band from the suburbs of Boston.  At the core of the band includes 3 brothers, John on Lead Vocals, Scott on Guitar & Vocals, and Frank on Keys/Acoustic Guitar & Vocals.  Joining the brothers include veteran Boston musicians Dan McGrath on Bass and Drummer Dickie Paris.

Whether headlining or sharing the bill with national artists such as Joe Nichols, Jerrod Niemann, Randy Houser, Tyler Farr, Uncle Kracker, Pat Green, or Bret Michaels to name a few, HB’s high energy performances continue to wow and electrify audiences all over New England.   Blending today’s top country hits along with their own original rockin’ country music has been a formula for success.  This has lead to a feature on WCVB TV show “Chronicle”, a Jägermeister sponsorship, and the Boston Globe to write “A band on the rise with a bright future”.

I’m excited for tonight’s edition of Machaca’s $1,000 Singer Songwriter Challenge. We have a rare night where 5 out of our 7 performers will be women singer-songwriters. Come on down at 8pm for what should be an awesome night of live, local music with the night’s finalist moving on for a chance to perform for a piece of the $1,500 prize purse in 2 weeks!

Greg Izor

A mash-up of Louisiana grit, Austin soul, and low-down Chicago heat, blues harmonica powerhouse Greg Izor is on a roll. After a successful run in Louisiana and appearances at New Orleans Jazz fest /Jazz Fest harmonica shows, Izor packed up his harps and set his sights on Austin. In Ausyin, Izor connected with the blues icons that have called Austin home – Pinetop Perkins, Gary Primich, Derek O’Brien, Denny Freeman, and Marcia Ball – and newer players like the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ Mike Keller, Johnny Moeller, and Nick Curran. He has been described by Living Blues Magazine as “That all-too-rare total package- a creative vocalist, harp player, songwriter, and showman.” Izor also landed the gig frontingthe legendary Texas band Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets

Drum Workshop with Mamadou – Friday at 6 PM – 7 PM

Mamadou Diop will host a monthly Drum Workshop at Floating Lotus Gloucester. Next workshop is:
Friday, March 22nd from 6pm-7pm

Mamadou Diop teaches drumming to students and professional drummers of all ages and skill levels. He teaches the importance of the drum in the African culture to the community as a mode of communication and in the daily life.

West african drumming is not just music, but an experience of the heart, mind, and spirit. It evokes self-discovery, spiritual renewal, joy for life, and a deep sense of community.

The truth is: We All have Rhythm!
Rhythm is our natural inheritance. It exists in our bodies, our hearts, our breath. It exists in the vibration of atoms, the cycles of the seasons, the ticking of clocks, the orbit of the earth. There is no part of creation that is without rhythm! Mamadou thinks that the energy of the drum can help to balance the vibration of your body and mind.

A truly holistic healing approach, group drumming breaks down social barriers, promotes freedom of expression, non-verbal communication, unity and cooperation. Drumming awakens dormant emotions and unexplainable feelings of excitement, peace, and ecstasy. It decreases depression, anxiety, and stress, boosts immune system functioning, and benefits physical health.

Machaca’s $1,000 Singer Songwriter Challenge

March 20th 8pm

The ORIGINAL $1,000 Singer-Songwriter Challenge returns on Wednesday, February 13th at our new home, Machaca! Now starting weekly at 8pm, 8 singer-songwriters will perform 3 songs each before a panel of live judges. See some of New England’s hottest new performers each Wednesday at Machaca. ABOUT THE CHALLENGE: Machaca presents the $1,000 Singer-Songwriter Challenge: an 8-week, performance event open to all musicians. Starting in early February 2019, this weekly event will select a finalist at the end of each night for 7 weeks. On the 8th week, all of the weekly finalists come together and perform for a piece of the $1,000 cash prize. Sign up by emailing your name, phone number and whether you are a solo artist, duo, trio, etc. to clangathianos@me.com. How it works: This weekly event, hosted by Chris Langathianos, will showcase musicians – solo performers, duos, trios & bands (no drums as setups must take less than 5 minutes) – allowing them to perform up to 3 songs. Performers will play before a panel of judges. The judges panels will change from week to week and will be made up of local musicians, business owners, etc. After each performance, judges will provide their live feedback to the performer and audience. A confidential score card will be kept, and a weekly winner will be announced at the end of the evening. After the 7 weeks of preliminaries, all 7 finalists and 1 wild card will return for week 8 to perform 3 songs – at least 1 MUST BE AN ORIGINAL – before a panel of celebrity judges. 3 winners will be selected and will go home with a piece of the $1,000 cash prize. 1st place / $700, 2nd / $200, and 3rd / $100. Other details: 1. Performers may participate on a weekly basis but may only win one week. 2.
