Machaca’s $1,000 Singer Songwriter Challenge

FEB 13 8pm

Details

The ORIGINAL $1,000 Singer-Songwriter Challenge returns on Wednesday, February 13th at our new home, Machaca! Now starting weekly at 8pm, 8 singer-songwriters will perform 3 songs each before a panel of live judges. See some of New England’s hottest new performers each Wednesday at Machaca. ABOUT THE CHALLENGE: Machaca presents the $1,000 Singer-Songwriter Challenge: an 8-week, performance event open to all musicians. Starting in early February 2019, this weekly event will select a finalist at the end of each night for 7 weeks. On the 8th week, all of the weekly finalists come together and perform for a piece of the $1,000 cash prize. Sign up by emailing your name, phone number and whether you are a solo artist, duo, trio, etc. to clangathianos@me.com. How it works: This weekly event, hosted by Chris Langathianos, will showcase musicians – solo performers, duos, trios & bands (no drums as setups must take less than 5 minutes) – allowing them to perform up to 3 songs. Performers will play before a panel of judges. The judges panels will change from week to week and will be made up of local musicians, business owners, etc. After each performance, judges will provide their live feedback to the performer and audience. A confidential score card will be kept, and a weekly winner will be announced at the end of the evening. After the 7 weeks of preliminaries, all 7 finalists and 1 wild card will return for week 8 to perform 3 songs – at least 1 MUST BE AN ORIGINAL – before a panel of celebrity judges. 3 winners will be selected and will go home with a piece of the $1,000 cash prize. 1st place / $700, 2nd / $200, and 3rd / $100. Other details: 1. Performers may participate on a weekly basis but may only win one week. 2. In the event of high demand for performance spots, the event host reserves the right to move previous performers further down the list. 3. All audio equipment is provided – PA, microphones, stands, and monitors. Sign Ups: Performers may register for a performance slot by emailing Chris Langathianos at clangathianos@me.com or through this Facebook page

Jan 26 Primal Roots – The Deep Well Sat 8 PM

Details

Welcome to the next Primal roots. Once again we are stepping outside of the boundaries and norms (of what a dance should be) so that we can go deeper into our truths. As human beings we are always finding and redefining ourselves. And Primal Roots will follow this thread too, allowing us to release our expectations and fixed ideas of how things should be. We are talking about our generational timelines, about our past, but also the present. How do we draw from that deep well? The water of Life and Mystery. Some of this we can experience through our words, but much of this is found in our direct experience of the world, aside from words. We can find it in movement and creative expression. We can find it in connection to others. After our welcoming Circle, we will begin the night with our great friend John Sprague who will preview his “Global Heart Medicine Show” (John will return later this year for the full show). After that we will begin the dance with some ceremonial drumming and an ongoing Art Project, followed by some primal music, sounds, and ecstatic dancing.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: CLENNON L. KING ON ‘MLK’S BOSTON YEARS’

A Filmmaker’s Granular Look at Dr. & Mrs. King’s New England Years a lasered look at the little-known years Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott spent in Boston and New England. Award-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist Clennon L. King, will present a slideshow, focusing on the Kings’ movements in Boston and New England, from the fall of 1951 to the spring of 1954.

“Americans know all about Dr. King relative to places like Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery, Washington, D.C. and Memphis, but virtually nothing about his time in Boston,” said Clennon L. King, (no relation) whose father was a lawyer for Dr. King in the Historic Albany Movement. “This slideshow seeks to fill in the blanks.” Clennon L. King will present the compelling PowerPoint® slideshow to audience, before leading a spirited conversation and Q&A with the audience. The program is free and open to the public.

Clennon L. King writes, “In a city as historic as Boston, there are few signs that Martin Luther King, Jr. lived, worked and played here before heading to Montgomery to the world stage,” said the Boston-based filmmaker. “My goal was to reconstruct his time here before it is lost to history forever.”

Clennon L. King’s 45-minute slideshow and discussion program is entitled “MLK’s Boston Years”, and was presented to MLK Boston, which plans to build a $5 million monument to Dr. and Mrs. King on the Boston Common. Boston’s NPR affiliate, WGBH 89.7 FM has twice interviewed King around his research on the Kings’ time in Boston. In April 2018, the filmmaker was featured on the Boston Edition of All Things Considered® with Barbara Howard, and in November 2018, he again was featured on ‘Under the Radar’ with Callie Crossley.

For interested media outlets want to interview Mr. King, please contact him directly at either 207-450-3585 or by email at clennon@augustinemonica.com

STEPHANIE BUCK: ‘SHADOWED LIVES’

Born and educated in England – degree from London University – married an American and moved to Gloucester in 1970 – became interested in local history through research on her house – which is just across the road from the Unitarian Universalist Church. She retired as Archivist/Librarian of the Cape Ann Museum last May after 14 years. The title of her presentation is “Shadowed Lives” – just skimming the surface of slavery on Cape Ann.

This Friday, November 16 at 7:30, featuring John McCutcheon. John is a “big name” for us. He is a well known traditional folk artist, singer-songwriter, and storyteller. He plays an amazing array of instruments, including the hammer dulcimer. A version of our (really his) poster that’s suitable for online posting is attached.

The concert page, which includes links for tickets, is at https://oldsloopcoffeehouse.org/concert/john-mccutcheon-2018.

Here is a video of John performing his classic song “Christmas in the Trenches”: https://youtu.be/sJi41RWaTCs

~

The annual Rockport Harvestfest celebration features the best regional bounty of the season — all in an unbeatable setting.

New England food producers gather under a giant tent on one of Rockport’s historic working wharves to celebrate the best of local food with fresh seafood, pastries, cider doughnuts, chowder, small-batch jams, locally-grown produce and more.

Local craft beers and wine produced in Massachusetts are on hand, along with Rockport’s own Twin Lights, with soda crafted from the 120-year-old company’s original recipes. Cooking demonstrations take place throughout the day, the highlight of which is the Seafood Throwdown, a competition-style showcase between two chefs, demonstrating the versatility of fish, coastal New England’s most significant harvest.

Harvestfest features plenty of live bluegrass, jazz, folk and Celtic music, cooking demos, a farm expo, and plenty of activities for families.

FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2017

FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2017 6:00PM Three Sheets to the Wind is an old sailing term and refers to a ship whose sheets (lines) have come loose, causing the sails to flap uncontrolled and the ship to shudder and roll like an uncontrolled drunk. It is also a Gloucester chantey/sea music group. Many of the group have years of song and sea history behind them. They love to interact with the audience to create a perfect storm of song and good cheer.

Friday 8-11pm ~ The JJ Nicastro Foundation’s 10th Annual Fiesta Thursday bash

courtesy photo

This is The JJ Nicastro Foundation’s 10th Annual Fiesta Thursday bash and we are planning the best one yet! We are switching things up a bit this year and Mile Marker One is gracious enough to host the 2017 Fiesta Kickoff Bash. The $10 cover charge goes to the foundation so we need to pack the house!

John John Nicastro contacted multiple bands and DJ’s and came across the electric Pulse of Boston! They are bringing a 6 piece band consisting of 3 vocalists, keyboards, drums, guitars and straight up groovey tunes. We will hear a little bit of everything that night but one thing is certain, the dancing will not stop!

Each year the foundation dispurses thousands of dollars in scholarships to Gloucester students for athletic and school activity fees. The only way The JJ Nicastro Foundation can assist these students is through fundraisers like these. So please, come out, bring your dancing shoes and a dancing partner (or 5) and let’s rock at Mile Marker One.
