Allen’s first guest is the show’s co-producer, Peter Van Ness, co-founder gimmesound.com & Celebrate Gloucester.

The premiere show features three songs by Allen Estes, two of which do not appear on any CD. The original premiere, scheduled for December 1 at 6:30pm, was thwarted by a cape-wide blackout. You can see the premiere on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 on Friday, December 3rd at 1pm and Sunday, December 5th at 6pm. It will air again on Wednesday, December 8th at 6:30pm. Check schedule for more air times. After shows air, you will be able to see archives on this website.

Allen and his guests have fun with lively dialogue exploring creativity, songwriting and the music business.

Shows are taped before a live studio audience.

If you would like to be in the studio audience or you’d like to be Allen’s guest on a future show — or if you have an idea for a guest or questions to ask or topics to cover, please complete the form below and someone will get in touch with you.

Joe and Renee
Renee Dupuis (voice, piano) and Joe Cardoza (voice, guitar) have been playing together for over ten years accumulating a vast repertoire of songs from the popular, rock, and folk traditions, as well as original music.
A graduate of the Hartt School, Renee sings everything from Weezer, to Etta James, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin. You can most recently hear/see her playing the role of Alicia Keyes in comedian Juston McKinney’s (Comedy Central) parody of Jay Z’s “Empire State of Mind”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iT2swSpODY

Berklee graduate Joe Cardoza plays electric and upright bass with many artists in the greater Boston area. He recently opened for Livingston Taylor at the brand new Shalin Liu Performance center in Rockport MA as bassist of the Jake Pardee Trio.

Together both Renee and Joe are a part of the alternative rock country band, The Bandit Kings (www.banditkings.com) who will be celebrating the release of their first full length album at TT The Bears in Cambridge and The Mint in Los Angeles.
“She is a strong, throaty alto with the voice of an earthy angel; he plays guitar with pure passion. The two together are like kids playing in a school playground, with ever so much spark and spontaneity; two swallows darting about together in mid-air, flying tandem with well-practiced precision and skill…Their voices and harmonies match up perfectly in jazz and the more popular songs of the Americana tradition…They leave a feeling of delightsomeness floating on the air.”

Alfred Nesser, after a gig in Salem, MA

Monteiro will take you on a fascinating musical journey.

Music Around Town ~ November 15 – 21, 2010

November 15, 2010 at 3:09 pm (Uncategorized)

This seARTS benefit will showcase the diverse voice of the guitar as a performance instrument.  Audiences will be delighted to hear the depth and range of American fingerstyle guitar, and connect to the narration and warmth of the performers.  The diversity of the performances is inspiring, as Bonfield, Coryell, and Davison pick their way through music ranging from country blues, ragtime and folk, to traditional Celtic, jazz, and classical pieces.  The show carries audience members on an auditory and educational tour of the guitar that is both inspiring for aficionados and guitarists and approachable for newcomers to finger style guitar. Larry Coryell is one of the world’s acknowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing”, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine. Ken Bonfield has toured nationally since 1994, has released 5 solo albums and 2 duo albums with violinist Joe Ebel, Steve Davison released his national debut “White River Suite” in 2010. Together, Bonfield and Davison are touring with Artistry of the Guitar.

Beethoven wrote this highly popular composition in 1807 to accompany Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s now obscure drama.  The music depicts the story of Coriolanus, a banished Roman patrician who shamefully and tragically leads an army against Mother Rome.  As one of Beethoven’s most performed and recorded works, the overture has far outpaced its literary counterpart in fame and acclaim.

Piano Concerto No. 2
It is fitting, perhaps, for young Kadar Qian to be performing Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto as it is the youthful work of a great pianist who was himself a prodigy.  Chopin, born in Poland of French parents, began performing in public when he was 8 years old.  Composed when he was 20, Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually Chopin’s first.  It was labeled the second because it was the second to be published.  The music itself is magically expressive and typical of Chopin.

Symphony No. 4 in A (Italian Symphony)
Mendelssohn spent the years 1829 -1831 touring Europe which provided the inspiration for his Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides, and of course the Italian Symphony.    Writing from Rome to his equally musical sister Fanny about his work in progress, he said “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done.”  Indeed it is a sunny work and evocative of the magical spirit of Italy.

Kinloch is an amazing guiatrist with a completely unique approach.
He’s full of surprises and lots of fun.  No guitar player or fan of

Thursday – 8:30 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party

From Mr. Dave Sags himself,
Welcome back the man who put the mental in instrumental: Mr. Bob Davis aka Johnny Carwash. He’s hot-roddin’ in with his Tele to tittilate you with his screamin’  oomph and pizazz, playin’ all your surfin favorites. I’m seasick already!
We also welcome back Mr. Gym Gwin, Fred‘s brother, who’s gonna get another job, I swear to gawd, if he could only get away from that evil conductor! And, of course, Greg T. and myself will be there, too. Surf’s up!
Try going over the bridge. It really doesn’t hurt. Anyhow, I’m  playing Friday nite at the Lyceum in Salem, once again with this really groovey jazz band called Jazzport. The room’s a terror! loud like airplane hanger, filled with amorphous divorcees of a certain age, ageing hipsters, and the slumming, overdressed youngsters looking for a mate.  But the music’s great! Somebody help me!

Friday – 9:30 to 12:30 ~ Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents

Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents will be returning to The Rhumb Line this Friday, November 19th, for three sets starting at 9:30pm.  We’ll be there shaking it til’ we close the place down!

Q-Dee Records has just released a new Jenny Dee 45rpm single on *purple vinyl* as part of the ‘Rock’n’Soul’ Series that includes releases by Barrence Whitfield and The Monkeyhips, Eli Reed’s “True Loves”, and Muck and The Mires.  The single features a stereo mix of “Big Ol’ Heart” b/w a Lillian Hale tune called “Don’t Boom Boom”.  The single will be available at the show, or it can be downloaded from the Q-Dee Records site.

See y’all Friday!

Thursday – 8:30 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party

From Mr. Dave Sags,
We got ‘im!. Took quite some effort, but we finally found him barbecuing squirrels under a highway underpass. So, ladies and genteelmen, allow me to introduce  Mr. Mario Perrett, cutie-pie saxist and vocalizing gargler of the finest kind. A gleeful return to his Madhouse roots brings us to magical  mayhem as we successfully avoid playing any of that stuff. This guy brings charts! But nobody can see! We love him! People line up for blocks just to see his uvula!
Fortunately, we got L’il Steevee Chaggaris on the Drumbulators to help us keep our blood pressure down, and, of course, Greg T. and myself will be there, too. Don’t miss it.
Now, pay attention: This Sunday, we need you. I’m playing a benefit for the North Shore Jazz Project at Chianti’s in Beverly Ma. This is important! we need your support! The group is trying to raise money to bring jazz and blues to students in local schools. I’ll be backing up an all-star array of local luminaries  including Gid Loring, Frank Stadled, John Hicks, Mark Earley and Dave Mattacks. We’ll  be shooting fish in  the barrel of Tin Pan Alley all afternoon long . Look out for sit-ins, too. Hours: 1 to 4 pm, 20 dollar cover.  Don’t be ell-seven; come out and do the wooly dance!

Program Notes

Coriolan Overture

Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, standards, and rock, and they bring a fresh perspective and youthful energy to each performance.

Thursday – 8:30 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party

From Mr Dave Sags himself,
Eeny meeny mighty mofo,  see this band but don’t eat tofu, if it gasses let it go, eeny meeny maybe go. If you don’t , you may possibly be insane, or , at best, a Republican. You may wake up in the rehab ward of Addison Gilbert and Sullivan Hospital, feeling homicidal just cuz you heard about it later…
These guys, these katz, are really sumphin’, a virtual spin-cycle of da blooz in it’s many configurations; I should know… I played with dese guys last Sunday, and I’m still lickin’ my wounded brainstem. Looks just like the Tingler, only wavin’ a white flag.
So, allow me to introduce Mr. Justin Quinn, Harmonicat, vogelizer, and frontman. Dives  deep into the Well of  Souls. Knows his stuff. He’s bringin’ some of my favorite guys with him. Like Per (pronounced “pear”) Hanson, drumblistipus octopi, and Jon Ross, on gritar. Both these guys have toured with James Cotton, Ronnie Earl, and Duke Robillard. They are scary good or “sick”, as Mark Earley says. He may even show up to see for hisself. Of course, Greg T. and his hat will be there,  and me, too, hiding behind the yellow police tape. Cut off your toetag and make it down while you still can.
Here’s a sample of Justin Quinn, The joint is gonna be rockin for sure.
