Saturday 9pmPOPPA CIGAR

 Afrobeat/Funky Dance

Poppa Cigar returns in a semi-original line-up, welcoming back Derek Dupuis on Keys and new Poppa member – Yahuba Jose Garcia-Torres on percussion!

Poppa Cigar is a 10 piece World-Funk orchestra 🙂

Formed in the Summer of 2014, the now 10+ piece strong Poppa Cigar is a rotating cast of some of the North Shore’s most devoted musicians. The band got together because there was mutual respect for Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and the Afrobeat style rhythms out of Nigeria and west Africa. There was a desire to make music that incorporated a driving horn section and music that got people dancing and thinking. With members of some of the area’s most well-known bands like The Jambalaya Horns, Groove Therapy, Live Dead, Funk du Jour and The Runaround – Poppa Cigar is an all-star experience that brings together the elements and rhythms of West African High Life, Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afropop, Brazilian Street Music (Batucada), Latin Jazz, Afrocuban and good ole-fashioned American Funk. The band also has been known to play songs by The Talking Heads and original compositions.

Poppa Cigar’s current lineup is:

Joe Wilkins – Guitars, Vocals
Luke Conlin – Bass Guitar
Dennis Monagle – Drumset
Derek Dupuis – Organ, Keyboards, Vocals
Yahuba Jose Garcia-Torres – Percussion

Laura Heinrichs – Flute
Carlos Menezes Jr. – Tenor Sax
Jamie Green Klopotoski – Baritone Sax
Zach Gorrell – Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Keyboards
Tim Klopotoski – Trombone, Tuba, Sousaphone
Jon Persson – Trumpet

« MYSCHYFFE MANAGED HOLIDAY CONCERT

Chelsea Berry: Saturday, December 14, 2019.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., performance begins as 7 p.m.
$30 ticket.
Chelsea Berry is a singer-songwriter with the edge, power, and finesse of legends. Her presence has been described by listeners as “compelling… she draws the entire house into her world like moths to a flame.” As a vocalist and performer, she evokes the style of artists such as Cheryl Crow, Eva Cassidy, KD Lang, and Melissa Etheridge.

Singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor calls her vocals “world class” and says of Berry, “A voice of remarkable power and control with a joyous soul. Brave and bright, Chelsea Berry is the real thing.” A favorite among venue owners up and down the East coast, Berry’s beautiful voice and commanding stage presence has brought her across the U.S. as regular support for Livingston and others as well as headliner of her own shows. Born and raised in Alaska, she now makes her home in Essex, MA.

Her music transcends its indie rock roots and touches listeners with its poetic lyric, bold melodies, and pure, clear, powerful vocals. Singer/songwriter Chris Smither says Berry is “..Great, talented, beautiful … her future is so bright you’re gonna have to wear shades.”

Berry has appeared on the cover of Boston magazines such as The Noise and Northshore Magazine. She has been featured multiple times on Boston’s 92.5 The River and Sirius XM’s The Loft as well as dozens of local stations from Maine to Florida. She has played Boston’s House of Blues, Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Shalin Liu in Rockport, MA, Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia and more. This next Primal Roots is about Crystallization. It’s about what happens when our dreams and visions become clear to us. We are thrilled to have guest artist and musician Derek Hoffend, who is bringing his Analog Synthesizer for this event. Derek is a professor of interactive media who teaches sound creation. He is also the creator of the luminous crystal floor and wall sculptures that will be part of the evenings festivities. These sculptures produce patterns of sound and light which together with the synthesizer will rock your socks off and drop you into deep waters. Jon & Lisa with other musical guests will join in to create a musical tapestry and at the end of the evening there will be an extended Savasana meditation (Yoga Nidra) with Courtney Rose. She is once again joining us to help design and facilitate the event. 15$ in advance 20$ at the door.

Saturday-9pm ~Brian Jarvis Trio

Connecticut-based musician, Brian Jarvis, brings his trio to Machaca this Saturday night for what promises to be an amazing night of music. ABOUT Brian Jarvis: New England singer/songwriter Brian Jarvis entices listeners with a captivating honesty and a voice drawing comparisons to David Gray and Matt Nathanson. For the past 6 years Jarvis has been on the road touring the country supporting several well-known acts within the Singer-Songwriter genre. 2019 marks the triumphant return with his first new EP “Anyone at All”. The 5 song EP features collaborations with some of Connecticut’s finest including the song “I’m Your Man” which was co-written with Stephen Kellogg. Teaming up with long time drummer and producer Rob Griffith from Bronze Radio Return, Jarvis is set to release his first new collection of songs in the spring of 2019. “The songs as a whole tackle more introspective themes and have been well received on the road, which is very rewarding and exciting.” said Jarvis about the new modern sound. Spending most of 2017 & 2018 on the road with hit songwriter Howie Day, Jarvis is ready to hit the ground running with long awaited follow up to his debut album “Beautifully Broken” which debuted in the iTunes Rock 100 back when downloads were a thing!

On Tuesday, September 10th, the wait will be over….The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor.

The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award-winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights and a protest against misogyny and oppression. Live from the London stage, Atwood will be interviewed by broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’

With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable and intimate event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect. The Testaments will be published by Vintage on 10 September.

7 guys. Multiple ways of making music using only their voices. What they do is far more than a cappella. They are a band without a band.

Having met in school and gospel choir they quickly discovered that they were doing more than just singing songs, they all discovered perfect hypervocal capabilities. That’s why Naturally 7 call their music “vocal play.” Every band member has his preferred style, or favorite songs and together they can interpret them all. Naturally 7 summon up soul, rap, rock and folk in one harmonious balance.

“Naturally 7 croons like a choir of angels, but they can also simulate a full orchestra or a pop-rock band…using just their voices.”

Nowadays they have famous fans such as Michael Bublé (whom they joined on 3 world tours), Coldpay (“Fix You” is one of the finest adaptions of music you can imagine), Quincy Jones (who called them “best a cappella band worldwide”), Herbie Hancock (listen to their H. Hancock medley) and many others.

Their repertoire is a mix of their own compositions and cover versions.

This year they are celebrating their 20th anniversary which will be accompanied by new releases and remixes of famous hits (such as “Wall of Sound”). They happily participated in CBS’ new TV format World’s Best which will air from February to April 2019. And of course: they tour around the world!
