On August 15 at 8 pm, Festina returns to celebrate the feast of St. Mary the Virgin — and its one-year anniversary of residency at St John’s, Gloucester — with an eclectic survey of Marian music. In a traditional Rite I Mass at the high altar with incense, we will feature the mystical Missa de Beata Virgine by Spanish priest-composer Francisco Guerrero, ‘Gaude Maria Virgo’ by his compatriot Victoria, the sounds of the Romantic Bavaria in ‘Ave Regina caelorum’ by Josef Rheinberger, and the exciting ‘Assumpta est Maria’ by late Renaissance England’s Peter Philips. Psalm 45 in Anglican chant by Archer and Ouseley and hymns ‘Immaculate Mary’ and ‘Sing we of the Blessed Mother’ round out the liturgy. If you’re driving, set your GPS to our parking lot at 33 Washington St, Gloucester, MA 01930. Everyone is welcome!
