Local Family Hosts Juvenile Diabetes Fundraiser at Jalapenos Restaurant in Gloucester

The Wylinn’s Wish/Juvenile Diabetes Foundation fundraiser at Jalapenos Restaurant is on Wednesday, September 29 between 4:30-9pm. Please join us for an evening of music, food and a 50/50 raffle in order to raise money for Diabetes research. 10% of all dinner receipts for that night have been generously donated by Jalapenos to the Wylinn’s Wish Walk-for-the-Cure Team (the team that will walk to save lives, sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the JDRF. Local musicians An

All you have to do is eat yummy burritos to help save lives!

Local musician Ann Marie Shimanoski (The Bandit Kings, SAFETY) has a niece. Her name is Wylinn Rose. Wylinn was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at 4 years old and has been living with the disease for two years. Recently, she was equipped with an insulin pump that is set to automatically disperse insulin as she needs it. The pump is surgically inserted and is stuck in her at all times.

Wylinn’s grandmother, Theresa Palmisano, Ann Marie, and the rest of her family has decided that although this is a temporary solution, it is not a cure and that merely surviving is no way for a child (or anyone) to live. The family has deep roots in Gloucester and the North Shore area and Wylinn’s parents own Goodies Ice Cream Shop in Danvers, MA. Palmisano has been organizing fundraisers for the past two years and has raised well over $12,000 for the JDRF. She sells printed bags and necklaces with all proceeds to support her cause. She works tirelessly at gathering sponsors, setting up booths at local fairs, and organizing teams for the JDRF Walk-a-Thons. Early this year she was highlighted in the JDRF national newsletter for her hard work and determination.

Palmisano was born and raised in Gloucester. She has been involved in the community and church for most of her life and hopes now that the Cape Ann community will rally behind her niece and her tremendous efforts for the JDRF. She says, “I truly believe that with our help, research will find a cure. Millions of children and adults are currently in different stages of Diabetes. Unfortunately, some outcomes for others will not only be devastating but also life threatening. I cannot sit back and watch this to happen to Wylinn. Funding is the only way to fuel research and I believe, that with your help, we can make a difference. When you support Wylinn’s Wish for a Cure (for JDRF) eighty-five percent of every dollar raised goes directly to education and research. As a ‘determined grandmother,’ there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t try to convey awareness of the seriousness of Type1Diabetes, and why we need to support funding for research and education for the cure. This is my mission.”

If you can’t come but would like to give, please email wylinnswish@gmail.com

Get ready for the return of that Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. Yes, yes , he’ll be with us all nite long puttin’ the hurt on da rhythm and spitting into the mike. Hopefully , we won’t need an ambulance hangin’ around on standby, although…
But seriously, folks, A.C. is one of our faves, and really knows how to wring the last drop of sweat out of a song. Invest in a new tube of Dentu-Cream and hobble the nite away.
Behind him, keeping us all in line will be our very own hibernian heavy  on the hides: Mr. Benny Benson. And, of course, my factotum and pool boy, Greg T. will be holding it all down. Me, too. An affair to remember

Thursday September 30 ~  8:00 to 12:00  ~ Samantha Farrell:

If I had to describe her, I’d say she was a mix between Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Samantha Farrell is a sparkling young singer-songwriter based out of Boston, who has been wowing critics and audiences alike, across the country with her unique mixture of jazz and folk-rock influenced  pop.  Described by national music magazine Relix as possessing “prodigious and undulating vocals that are delivered with rare, swinging passion,” and as a “soulful mix of Van Morrison’s country hospitality, Ella Fitzgerald’s jazzy range and Fiona Apple’s modern honesty,” Farrell has been touring the North east in support of her latest two efforts; Her full length album “Luminous” was produced by the late LeRoi Moore, a founding member and saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band. “Luminous,” a completely independent release, sky rocketed to #7 on the national pop iTunes charts from it’s formidable grass roots support. Her music has been heard on major network television shows such as “Shark” (NBC), Privileged and One Tree Hill (CW). For more information, find her on the web at www.samanthafarrell.com

Friday October 1 ~ 8:30 to close ~ Ryan Faraday:

At 24 years old, Ryan Fardy has had a fantastic start to his 9-year career.  He has played to crowds all over New England and the United States (Las Vegas, California, Florida…etc), and even Canada.  He has opened for the legendary Chaka Khan, Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Mountain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Derringer, Hoobastank, and more.  He was also the featured cover story for Boston Blues Magazine at the age of 18. With an upbringing on the Boston Area blues scene, Ryan has created his own genre, mixing Blues, Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul, and Pop.  He is striving to make his songwriting ability known even though he still holds the “guitarslinger” tag throughout the Boston area.  His shows combine the inventiveness of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, the passion of Eric Clapton, and the on stage intensity of Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Audiences typically find themselves in awe of his command of the guitar and of the stage, and have trouble believing that they are witnessing the talents of someone so young.  However, they don’t have any trouble believing that they are seeing a performer who has a very bright future. This seARTS benefit will showcase the diverse voice of the guitar as a performance instrument.  Audiences will be delighted to hear the depth and range of American fingerstyle guitar, and connect to the narration and warmth of the performers.  The diversity of the performances is inspiring, as Bonfield, Coryell, and Davison pick their way through music ranging from country blues, ragtime and folk, to traditional Celtic, jazz, and classical pieces.  The show carries audience members on an auditory and educational tour of the guitar that is both inspiring for aficionados and guitarists and approachable for newcomers to finger style guitar. Larry Coryell is one of the world’s acknowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing”, he has also been christened as “a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by Dan Ouellette of Down Beat Magazine. Ken Bonfield has toured nationally since 1994, has released 5 solo albums and 2 duo albums with violinist Joe Ebel, Steve Davison released his national debut “White River Suite” in 2010. Together, Bonfield and Davison are touring with Artistry of the Guitar.

Program Notes

Coriolan Overture
Beethoven wrote this highly popular composition in 1807 to accompany Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s now obscure drama.  The music depicts the story of Coriolanus, a banished Roman patrician who shamefully and tragically leads an army against Mother Rome.  As one of Beethoven’s most performed and recorded works, the overture has far outpaced its literary counterpart in fame and acclaim.

Piano Concerto No. 2
It is fitting, perhaps, for young Kadar Qian to be performing Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto as it is the youthful work of a great pianist who was himself a prodigy.  Chopin, born in Poland of French parents, began performing in public when he was 8 years old.  Composed when he was 20, Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually Chopin’s first.  It was labeled the second because it was the second to be published.  The music itself is magically expressive and typical of Chopin.

Symphony No. 4 in A (Italian Symphony)
Mendelssohn spent the years 1829 -1831 touring Europe which provided the inspiration for his Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides, and of course the Italian Symphony.    Writing from Rome to his equally musical sister Fanny about his work in progress, he said “It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done.”  Indeed it is a sunny work and evocative of the magical spirit of Italy.

CHELSEA BERRY
Walk With Me

10-song CD

Ms. Berry’s voice is heard to evincing effect on numbers such as the lovely “Walk With Me” and the mesmeric “The One I’ve Waited For,” and fans of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks will find a great deal to like in these particular compositions. Otherwise, overall this seems a largely anodyne collection of sometimes overly solipsistic confessional songs and character pieces, though never less than competently executed. Her compositions are often jazzy and melodic in a restrained fashion, which is seldom the cause of any undue offense, yet also all too seldom evocative of any particular sense of wonder. (Francis DiMenno)

From the very first time I heard Chelsea Berry’s song  ” The One I’ve Waited For”  I said this should be number one on the charts. It is number one in my mind along with ” Walk With Me”.  Being a romantic I can easily get caught up in her music. Chelsea’s songs hit home in many ways and I am sure once you have listened to them you  will certainly agree. Check out the links to get a taste of Chelsea’s music.

Topside Grille –  Events  ~ http://www.topsidegrill.com/index.php?link=events

Thursday September 16
Toni Ann Enes:

Toni Ann is a local musician who has played the North Shore for 30 years.  In 2002 she released a debut CD colaborateing together with her life long friend David Brown.  Her favorite format is a combination of acoustic covers and original  music accompanied by her guitar partiner Dave Keon who performs with numerous local bands adding his unmistakable guitar signature.  To categorize the duo’s sound would be a groove similar to Sade and finger picking style of Lindsey Buckingham lending itself to Fleetwood Mac selections, 80’s Classics and current releases such as John Meyer.  The duo offers a little bit for everyone

Friday September 17
Inge Berge:
Inge Berge writes and performs interesting, catchy, unique, genre-bending originals as well as carefully chosen rock, americana and country covers songs  The sound is song-oriented, adult alternative rock sprinkled with elements of ambient, electronica and psychedelia. Influences include David Bowie, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan. He has played several hundred venues around the world, from Japan to Europe to Gloucester, MA; from tiny bars to stadiums and theaters. Check out more at www.ingebergeworld.com

I have never heard these guys play out before. I checked them out on myspace a while ago and for some reason could not make it to one of their gigs. This band is wicked good! It was like being in the room with Creedence Clearwater Revival with some massively awesome music going on. This is of no surprise when you have Dave Brown, Greg Tower, John P. Anthony and Forrest Padget in the room. They started the night off with “Heard It Through The Grapevine”. My favorites ” I Put A Spell On You” and “Run Through The Jungle” and ” Born On The Bayou”. People where sayin is that guy (John P. Antony) from Creedence Clearwater Revival? He certainly sounds like he is. People knew the words most of the time and were singing along. Now I know why I had all of their music when I was a teenager but it became gone somehow. Guess I’m going to have to change that. There was nonstop dancing and the place was packed. Wow!.

Check them out. Hope they play again soon!

Thursday September 9 ~ Greg Luttrell
Greg Luttrell is a singer & guitarist from Detroit, MI who relocated to Boston and gets around doing performances of all kinds of feel good music. Whether performing with one of many bands or as a solo act, Greg’s energy and delivery are a unique experience. Luttrell is an outstanding guitar player and his voice has been likened to Marvin Gaye, Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Brad Nowell. He honed his skills playing in blues and cover bands in the 90s and formed his own funk and soul band, Michigan Blacksnake who released Michigan Blacksnake(1997) and the road at a breakneck pace.  They were nominated for a Boston Music Award as Best Funk Band in 2000  and continued playing concerts and festivals for the next three years. They shortened the name to Blacksnake and released Mind Over Matter(2004) and played 200+ shows that year and for years after all over the US and in the Caribbean. In between runs with his bands, Greg has thrilled crowds from NY to LA with his solo acoustic performances. With a song list topping 400 tunes and a deep knowledge of genres, there’s almost no crowd he can’t jam with.  He formed his own band again in 2005, the Greg Luttrell Band, a full band version of his acoustic act where genres blend seamlessly and songs evolve every night for whatever kind of party is happening. Check out more at www.gregluttrell.com
Friday September 10  ~ Cool Change:

Cool Change is a music project that consists of a number of great musicians from the North Shore area. The nice thing about it is, it can change from an acoustic duo, to a two guitar trio, to a one guitar/percussion trio to a full band and fits into whatever venue. The kind of music, being blues, classic rock, R&B, and a small dose of pop  stays the same but the library of songs just keeps growing. One of our goals is to have people listening to songs and thinking “I love this song, no one ever plays this!! ” and it’s working. More often than not, people will come up after the gig and say just that, that our song selections are like old friends they haven’t heard from in a while. Check out more at www.coolchangemusic.com

Wednesday 8:00 to 11:00pm ~  True Vintage: 1930’s jazz, lounge, and torch

Brian King sings, Joe Thomas plays piano.
Songs made famous by Billie, Ella, Chet, Porter, Gershwin, Hart, and more. Innuendo galore. Sit around the piano and sing along. Wear your top hat and your Sunday shoes. Bring your stole, order a Tom Collins, and toast to the glamorous life.

They have a Facebook page, Roaring Mary, with graphics etc. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Roaring-Mary/124771567541091?v=wall

It’s a great time and very cool for kids as well as adults in a venue that is not a bar, appropriate for all ages. Hope to see you there!

PM. Five hours of great music performed by some of the North
Shore’s best. Each hour will include primary musicians with guest players,
covering selections from acoustic classics, bluegrass, blues, Celtic, jazz,

swing, and new originals. The line up is: 1-2PM: Barry O’Brien and

friends, 2-3PM: Steve Brennan and Henry Nigro, 3-4PM: Ryan/Ortolani/Fleming,

4-5PM: Sheila Jones and Ron Schrank, with Honky Tonk Women, and 5-6PM: Wild

Maple (Gary Dolinsky, Trish DeCaprio and friends). The setting
is outdoors, under the tent in the field next to

the historic barn that houses the Lanesville Community
Center. Food and beverages will be available for sale by The Plum Cove

Grind, Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ, The Lobster Pool, and Fisherman’s Brew. Local
crafts for sale, plus a great raffle. Admission is free, with
donations gratefully accepted. Parking is available at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church at 1123 Washington St. Come join
us!

The LCC is currently raising funds to
redesign the center’s interior to accommodate more music and arts, as well as
private parties, to create a community resource for everyone
to enjoy. Come see what we are up to. For more information on
the players, other LCC events, parking areas, and directions, see our website,
