Music Around Town ~ May 30 – June 5, 2011
Kingsley Flood describe themselves as an Americana band that “draws as much from Woody Guthrie and the Band as it does Joe Strummer and the Replacements.”
Kingsley Flood’s latest recording titled “I Don’t Wanna Go Home” was recently featured on NPR’s “Song of the Day” , and the K-Flood does indeed rock. They have a devoted allegiance of fans in Gloucester who pack the Rhumb Line everytime. The band’s lead guitarist, George Hall, has lived in Gloucester for 10 years, after many years of rocking Boston in former bands Dogzilla and Seks Bomba. Kingsley Flood will be playing at the Rhumb Line Saturday, June 4th, three sets. It’s a great experience to see them close up, the tiny room explodes with rocking wild abandon. Great new track…but also worth checking out the first album Dust Windows, for which Kingsley Flood won “Best New Artist of the Year” at the 2010 Boston Music Awards. They also have many videos posted on YouTube including a killer version of another new song, “Mannequin Man” as performed live at TT the Bear’s in Cambridge.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

A few words from Dave,
A busy one, so, let’s get goin’! This Thursday at the Rhumbline we’re proud to present that Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. He’s got some new toonz for us to do. I’m willin’ and able. Backing him up will be that irrrepressible Irish Cream of a drummbler, Mr. Benny Benson. Greg T. and myself will fill out the wasteline.
Now, on Friday nite, It’s the Season Premiere of The Geezerz, aka Dave Sag’s Atomic Cocktail at the Studio on Rocky Neck. Last year, we chased out all the termites with our rousing renditions of all our unpopular blooz tunes. That’s Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks, Greg Tower, and myself. We hope to continue the tradition this year, so, c’mon down! We start at 9 pm, go to midnite.
Last and least, next Monday nite, I’ll be limping in to Captain Carlo’s for a fabulous evening of classic jazz ,dixieland, blues, and the Great American Schlongbook with my fave musical buddies, The Good Old Salty Jazz Band. There’s probably 7 or 9 of us, I’m not really sure, and Mark Earley and Myself are the youngest members, though it’s hard to tell sometimes. YOU SHOULD BE THERE: THIS IS IMPORTANT. You don’t know what you’re missing. Aaah, a warm evening, groovey jazz, and cocktails on the deck; what could be better… Start time is 6:30 and we go to 9:30, so all you old farts have no excuse for dozing off and missing all the fun!

Cape Ann Brewing ~ http://www.capeannbrewing.com/
Chantey Night, an open Tuesday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the now-closed Cameron’s to the Cape Ann Brewing Company. The singing begins at 8:30 every Tuesday night. For all the schooner heads this is quite a thing to see. If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool.
Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing. Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

This has to be one of the funniest messages yet.
From Dave himself,
This thursday’s Rumline show features our own homegroan musical prodigy, Mr. Dave Brown, the systolic Svengali of sliiide glitarrh. Always a pleasure. He’s bringing his entire bungee cord collection, too. Unfortuately his (and our) companion zygote Mr. Dave Mattacks had to cancel after suffering setbacks from some elective surgery. Luckily, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, with the napalmolive hairdo, is ready to fill some mighty big shoes. Look for him on the eggbeaters, cackling away. As usual, Greg T. and myself fill out the waistline.
They say summer’s coming: It’s Mammorial Day Weakend. and to get you off to a good start, The Madfish Grill proudly presents MADHOUSE this Friday nite. We’re gonna boogie! John Keegan and his ants are ready to crawl up your leg all night long! Start scratching!

Monday~
PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA:
BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY NO. 9 (HD BROADCAST)
Monday, May 23, 8PM
Composed a century apart, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony both share a sense of pushing the symphonic genre into new areas, in both cases partly through the inclusion of chorus. But while Beethoven’s final work in the genre bears an outwardly “symphonic” structure–four movements and a big finale–Stravinsky’s from 1930 feels more oratorio-like. “It is not a symphony in which I have included Psalms to be sung,” Stravinsky said. “On the contrary, it is the singing of the Psalms that I am symphonizing.” In any event Stravinsky’s finale, “Alleluia-Laudate Dominum” delves the same celebratory spirit that made Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” an unprecedented expression of ecstasy in 1824. Maestro Dutoit is joined in this ingenious pairing by renowned soloists and the Philadelphia Singers Chorale.

(Thanks to Dave Sag for giving up one of his fantastic Thursday night slots to allow the band a hometown show!) The Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona has invited pApAs fritAs to reunite this year for their 50,000+ attendee festival, which will be preceded by shows in Brussels, Paris, and Marseilles. Two of their three albums (on Minty Fresh Records, Chicago) were recorded in West Gloucester, so after six European tours, two Japanese tours, countless cross-U.S. tours, and ten years…it’s fitting for the band to reunite here in Gloucester. The band will be playing with Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents the next day (Friday, May 20th) at Harpoon Fest (at the Harpoon Brewery in Boston), as well, before departing for Europe.

Jalapenos Benefit Featuring LIVE MUSIC by ColdStream May 2, 2011
Hi Joey,
My husband and I subscribe to Good Morning Gloucester – it has really helped us get acclimated to the area. Thank you! Love your pics and updates.
I am a repeat Breast Cancer 3 Day walker – I have walked the 60 miles in Boston in July of 2009 & 10 and I am now preparing for the July 2011 walk. I will be doing a benefit at Jalapenos on Monday evening, May 2. We will have live music from 6:30-9 pm by ColdStream. I was wondering if you might add this event to your live music section? As you probably know, Jalapenos donates 10% of their proceeds from these benefits, which is very generous!
Monday, May 2 – Jalapenos Benefit Featuring LIVE MUSIC by ColdStream – a 4 piece acoustic band made up of 2 guitarists, a bass player and a mandolin player. They specialize in three and four part harmonies. Their music ranges from soft rock to pop, soul, Irish, Americana, country, English folk and classic rock. They are a staple in the southern New Hampshire restaurant circuit playing to warm receptions everywhere. 6:30 – 9 pm
Thanks for any shout out you can provide. If you have other promotional ideas, please let me know!
Best,
Liz Dooley

Monday – 9:00 to 12:30 ~ Open Jam with Dan King and friends
I am wicked excited that the Monday night jam is back. If you happen to stop by you may get to hear the Bandit Kings, Inge Berge and who knows who may appear. During these jams you get some magical moments from musicians that are there to let loose with no planned agenda.
Thank you to Dan King for hosting this jam and to Fred Shrigley for making it possible.

From Dave himself,
Well, we got a new guy that I want you all to see. Name’s Pete Henderson. Plays gritar and singhs, too. He hosts a gig similar to mine only on another planet in a faraway galaxy. Comes highly recommended. Has six fingers. You’ll like him.
Behind the curtain pulling strings will be our man in Paris, Mr. Forrest Padgett on the agitators. Of course, Greg T and myself will complete the circuit. Czech it out.

The Orleans Trio
Best known for “Dance With Me” and “Still the One,” Orleans has more than earned its place in American pop culture history, and continues to sound better than ever. The Orleans Trio, with original members Lance and Larry (lead voice on ALL the hits) Hoppen, plus Dennis “Fly” Amero is an intimate, “unplugged” version of this prestigious and legendary group. Their vibrant harmonies, deep/broad catalog of classics and impressive NEW tunes, along with signature guitar work are proof that Orleans, in any configuration, is indeed “STILL THE ONE” and “STILL HAVIN’ FUN”! Their audience rapport, humor, onstage chemistry and versatility make this show a favorite for lovers of all live music.
