Music Around Town ~ April 25 – May 1, 2011

April 25, 2011 at 4:41 pm (Music)

A couple of my favorite bands are playing at TT The Bears ~ Gloucester’s own “Bandit Kings” and “Kingsley Flood  (who I first got to see at a Monday night open jam at the Rhumb Line, probably a couple years that is when I first fell in love with them ) along with others that I have not seen before. This is guaranteed to be a good night. Hopefully you can make it over the bridge, car pool train or what ever way you can. Hope to see you there.

This time around, we feature our main  man from Ipswich: the one and only ORVILLE GIDDINGS. We’re forcing him  to change out of his overalls and put down that rake. This cat has a smile that makes Chernobyl look like a  busted light bulb. Singer, dancer, vogelizer, and celebrity landscaper, too. It’s always a raised pleasure dot every time he joins us.
Fooling around behind all this will be that highly polished hood ornament: Mr. Steevie Chaggaris, on the eggbeaters and other symbols. Stee-vee  has just spent a harrowing nite in the Rockport cooler after getting stopped for refusing to wear a Greek fishing hat.
Of course, Greg Tee and myself will be there, too, to round everything off to the nearest eighth note. Don’t forget…it’s  steak nite too, so if you’ve got a hankerin’ for some beefsnake, this is the place to be. and again, thank you all for your continued support.

Upcoming events

From GoodMorningGloucester

Hi Joey,

My husband and I subscribe to Good Morning Gloucester – it has really helped us get acclimated to the area. Thank you! Love your pics and updates.

I am a repeat Breast Cancer 3 Day walker – I have walked the 60 miles in Boston in July of 2009 & 10 and I am now preparing for the July 2011 walk. I will be doing a benefit at Jalapenos on Monday evening, May 2. We will have live music from 6:30-9 pm by ColdStream. I was wondering if you might add this event to your live music section? As you probably know, Jalapenos donates 10% of their proceeds from these benefits, which is very generous!

Monday, May 2 – Jalapenos Benefit Featuring LIVE MUSIC by ColdStream – a 4 piece acoustic band made up of 2 guitarists, a bass player and a mandolin player. They specialize in three and four part harmonies. Their music ranges from soft rock to pop, soul, Irish, Americana, country, English folk and classic rock. They are a staple in the southern New Hampshire restaurant circuit playing to warm receptions everywhere. 6:30 – 9 pm

Thanks for any shout out you can provide. If you have other promotional ideas, please let me know!

Best,
Liz Dooley

The Orleans Trio
Best known for “Dance With Me” and “Still the One,” Orleans has more than earned its place in American pop culture history, and continues to sound better than ever.  The Orleans Trio, with original members Lance and Larry (lead voice on ALL the hits) Hoppen, plus Dennis “Fly” Amero is an intimate, “unplugged” version of this prestigious and legendary group. Their vibrant harmonies, deep/broad catalog of classics and impressive NEW tunes, along with signature guitar work are proof that Orleans, in any configuration, is indeed “STILL THE ONE” and “STILL HAVIN’ FUN”! Their audience rapport,
humor, onstage chemistry and versatility make this show a favorite for lovers of all live music.

A few words from Dave, himself,

This thursday at the Rhumb Line features  the Batman and Robin of the music world: that dynamic duo of Ed “Ed” Scheer and Mario Perrett. Eddie, being one of our favorite drumblers and focalists gotta drag out our buddy Mario, movie star ,and cutie-pie saxist, for a cruize around the block every once in a while. So, the \world will come to a screeching halt upon the stage  as we tie up the hands of time, and make it scream uncle. Rheum-er has it that there will be a plentitude of sit-ins and  spit-ups. You won’t wanna miss it.

And then Sunday, Mark Earley Productions® is proud to present….me. Once again , Mark is forcing me to play with some incredible Jazz musicians at THE STONE SOUP in IPSWICH. From 5 to 8 p.m. I’ll be cranking it out with such immortals as  John Hyde, on keys, Jim Gwin, Fred’s brother, on skins, Tom Palance, Jack’s brother, on trumpet, and  Mark Earley on saxes . Should be a hoot. Free bibs for every fan if you make it past the first set. Food is pretty good, too ,I hear .

Best,
Liz Dooley

Blues like I like it.

by Joanne Silva on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 1:20pm

The Rosebud was host to five bands with a Mississippi Delta, Rockabilly, Sultry blues style that totally fulfilled any desire that I could ever have for live blues. You know the feeling you got when you were a child or as an adult for that matter at Christmas time, oh the anticipation. Well that’s how it was for me last night. I know there is no comparison between the two. Many times you may have heard me say music is my addiction and I really can’t deny it.

It started off with the Tokyo Tramps whirling into a cyclone of music that picked you up and carried you away, ending there set with  on fire version of “Rollin and Tumblin”. Then came Cashman, smokin,  when he was done I knew that I had to get his CD the last song unfortunately was not on the recording so I have something to look forward to. Do I know the name of it no, but I will find out for sure.

Next was Pork Chop Willie. This band had the Junior Kimbrough thing goin down big time. Way to busy dancing to remember all the songs, you have to know, they were great.  Then came the Ten Foot Polecats. They exceeded my expectations once again and the most energetic out of all the bands. New song “I’m In Love All Over Again” and One of my most favorites “Squeeze”  They ended their set with “Chickenhead Man” they did T-Model Ford good on this one. Man, and let me tell you the room was smokin, people dancing all around hootin and hollerin, this is one song you can’t sit still too. Then to top it all off, the cherry on top, Kent Burniside. R.L. Burnside’s grandson. He is certainly carryin on the tradition. I own two of his CD’s and the word is another is coming in July and it’s going to be on a label this time, can’t wait for that. I love the way the guitar cry’s and Kent’s voice is so soothing and he has some wicked deep messages in his songs. ” I Heard”, “Why Do You Do Me Like You Do” and  “Black Mattie” were some of songs, it was all so good. Whole lotta dancing goin on. The news is they are going to try to have more events like this in the future at the Rosebud and around the Massachusetts area.

What an extraordinary show and so look forward to the next one, big time. Hope to see you there.

Special thanks to Jim Chilson, the Boston Blues Society, in conjunction with Blues Audience Magazine and JugTown Radio for this event.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

From Dave himself,

He’s baack… after a long hiatus at a bingo machine repair school, Mr. Steve Sadler joins us for a night of bilious rumination and metamusical delight.  One of the busiest guys I know, Steve has been known to whip out a mandolin or fiddle or even a ukelele, or is it an ukelele?  Nonetheless, get your butt down here to see how it all unfolds.  The dude amazes me.
Backing him up will be our very own localboy, Mr. John Loud, of the famous Ennui Smith Band, on skins and concussion. Of course, Greg T. and myself complete the transaction.
And don’t forget: Monday Afternoon from 1 to 3 at the ROSE BAKER Senior Center, it’s the GOOD OLD SALTY JAZZ BAND.,featuring Mark Earley and a cast of thousands, myself among them. Hear us stretch the limits of believability and honor the masters of the Great American Schlongbook. It’s free, just like this email. Hope you like it.
The silly note youall got from me this mourning was a forward from Our fearless leader, Fred, at the Rhumb Line. Where else?? C’mon now, what else have I got to do? New menu, new whine list. Come czech it out. Lower fat and agglutinization of the facts will prove to be a windfall for us all.

LIVE MUSIC

Cape Ann Brewing ~ http://www.capeannbrewing.com/

Chantey Night, an open Tuesday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the now-closed Cameron’s to the Cape Ann Brewing Company.   The singing begins at 8:30 every Tuesday night.
For all the schooner heads this is quite a thing to see.  If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool.

Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing.  Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

Topside Grille –  Events  ~ http://www.topsidegrill.com/index.php?link=events

Hey everyone,

The Topside Grill is finally opening for the season this Friday! We hope everyone had a great winter (stupid snow!), and are now ready for Spring and warm weather. We have completely renovated our entire dinning room this year and can’t wait for everyone to see it! We are expecting a great weekend so we are encouraging people to make reservations for best seating during dinner hours 🙂 hope to see you all there!

We are also featuring new photography by Judith Montferrante and the Good Morning Gloucester photographers all around the restaurant! Also, launching my brand new Spring cocktail menu which I am very excited about (new drinks, wine, and beer). See you this weekend!!!

Thanks,

Doug Silva
