Celebrating Gloucester’s Gabriel, Sylvester “Hooley” Ahola
In March, Gloucester will be celebrating the life and music of our own world famous trumpeter. Two events will be held at the LanesvilleCommunity Center, located at 8 Vulcan St. and once the Ahola family’s dairy barn.
- Sunday March 10, 1:30 – 4:00, “Hooley’s Place in Jazz History”
Come listen to his wonderful music, and stories by people who knew and played with him, and enjoy photos, displays and some of his home movies from the 30′s. The event is free and open to the public, donations welcomed. Join us for coffee and nisu.
- Saturday, March 23, from 8-11, dance and stomp to Hooley’s music played live by the 7 piece jazz and swing band The Seacoast Stompers. Beer and wine will be on sale. Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Gloucester Music and the Plum Cove Grind in Lanesville, or $12 at the door.
- And, during the month of March, the Cape Ann Museum at 27 Pleasant St. will be celebrating Hooley with an exhibit from their archives.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, mahout driver Fred has ordained that the Blues Bash™ shall be forthwith changing our startup time. We’re going for 8 pm to 11 pm all thru the winter. Forget 9 to 12! that’s for youngsters! We’re going for the formaldehyde crowd! But, seriously, folks, a lot of you have struggled to stay awake long enough to force yourselves to go out at nite. I’m the same way. But, if I can do it…..I’m actually excited about this. Many of our loyal fans have been quick to point out that there’s a lag from the time the wake ends till we start, so, this’ll give you a chance to clear the decks. Besides, it’s Valentine’s Day. Bring you insignificant other and clamp down on her heart! Damn, this martini is good….
So, let’s party! This Thursday brings up the rather large matter of Mr. Steve Sadler, one of my personal favorites. Guit-slinger, vocalist and recreational anesthesiologist, you’re sure to find something fabulous in his smood stylings. Not only that, but the electrifying Mr. Jim Scoppa is going to materialize, too. For many years the slashing guitarist for T.H.and The Wreckage, this cat has sharp claws that will open your pineal gland faster than you can say,”What, me worry?” Unfortunately, our chosen drummer, who shall remain nameless, has been rushed to the hospital for emergency cosmetic weenis surgery. Prognosis is good, but a suitable replacement is under my grow lite, and should be firm by Thursday.

We have been informed by the Shalin Liu that both of this weekend’s concerts are cancelled. The shows have been rescheduled for March 1 and 2; if you are unable to attend those shows, Rockport Music will issue refunds on previously purchased tickets. Please stay safe and we will see you soon!!!

Please join us to celebrate the release of Chelsea Berry’s newest full length album, “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”.
The new record is “energetic and wild and has its moments of epic orchestration while the lyrics send the message of the story of human struggle and love and loss and all that stuff I love to write about and people can relate to.
I am really excited about this album because it’s going to be a whole new side of the music- and a whole new side of me. Growing and changing and not being afraid to leave it all out there– without losing that familiarity and approachability that’s so central to me as a performer.”
The CD will be available for purchase and there may even be a couple of impromptu performances.
Also, on Friday and Saturday, Febraury 8th and 9th, Chelsea and her spectacular group of players will perform at The Shalin Liu Performance Center. There are still some tickets left for Friday night’s performance. Don’t miss it!

Sadly, but certainly no surprise I’m sure, Full Circle and Espresso Italian Grill & Pub has decided that it’s in everyones best interest and safety to postpone tonights Full Circle performance. We will postpone the date to Saturday, March 16th.
