Inge Berge will be hosting the jam tonight. This should be very interesting, to say the least.

Last week Inge opened up with some Pink Floyd and gave us a few of his originals too.

I wonder what he has in store for us this week?

Monday  – 9:00 to 12:30  ~ Open Jam with Dan King and friends
I am wicked excited that the Monday night jam is back. I
have to say that I loved hearing The Bandit Kings and Chelsea Berry
over the past few months. They took the place of the jam and gave us
some extraordinary music.
During these jams you get some magical moments from musicians that are there
to let loose with no planned agenda. Thank you to Dan King for hosting
this and to Fred Shrigley

Thursday – 8:30 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sags Blues Party

He’s back! After a grueling  convalescence after a bizarre Cheez Whiz malfunction, Mike O’Connell is ready to step back into those white loafers and take control of his life again. Citizen ,weekend father, amiable glitarist  with vocals smooth as baby’s feet, we’re ready to take all he can give us. He’s promised me he’ll wear his plaid flannel wifebeater in honor of this glorious occasion. My high hat beaver man.
Cringing whilst backing him up will be that happy new newlywed, Mr. Benny O. Benson, who says things are fine in Glocca Morra. He’ll be thrashing those skins to the boogy beat behind Greg “Whammy Bar” Tower on catarrh, and myself, on base. A night to remember. Do come.

Topside Grille –  Events  ~ http://www.topsidegrill.com/index.php?link=events

Thursday- 8:00 to close ~ Max Sullivan:
Max Sullivan is one of the areas up and coming young performers. While he is known as a great blues guitarist, he plays all styles of music: classical, gospel, funk, roots, punk, classic rock. He writes and performs his own material in addition to performing covers. His set list is eclectic; you’ll hear anything from Buddy Guy to the Ramones. This young blues man knows his roots, but he is as influenced by the Pixies as by John Lee Hooker. His original songs are clearly blues infused but have crossover appeal. Max is currently performing around southern NH, MA, and NY: solo, and with his trio, the Max Sullivan Group. He also performs with the International House of Blues Foundation band, at the Boston House of Blues. Check out more at www.sonicbids.com/maxsullivan

Friday 8:30 to close ~ Cool Change
Cool Change is a music project that consists of a number of great musicians from the North Shore area. The nice thing about it is, it can change from an acoustic duo, to a two guitar trio, to a one guitar/percussion trio to a full band and fits into whatever venue. The kind of music, being blues, classic rock, R&B, and a small dose of pop  stays the same but the library of songs just keeps growing. One of our goals is to have people listening to songs and thinking “I love this song, no one ever plays this!! ” and it’s working. More often than not, people will come up after the gig and say just that, that our song selections are like old friends they haven’t heard from in a while. Check out more at www.coolchangemusic.com

Hoodoo Revelator

I do not call myself blueslvr for nothing. I have known The Hoodoo Revelator  for along time now. Blues in high gear.  A few of the guys left band and became The Ten Foot Pole Cats .  Jeff Fabrizio the bass player kept this  name alive. Yes, alive and kicking. There is no way you can possibly sit still while these guys are playing. I hope you can come and check them out when they are in town. They have a new harp player Glen Asaro who you are going to love. He does Whammer Jammer to the moon.
J. Geils, Magic, Dick the whole band would be proud to hear what Glen puts out. Although they are not strictly blues they know how to ignite a crowd and get them on to the dance floor. Last time they played  people were dancing right up until closing time. It was wild.  Please be sure to set the date aside.
I look forward to seeing you there.

Sick and tired of the same old thing? Wanna add some voltage to your puny, miserable existence? Do you feel like slashing your ankles everytime you look in the mirror, or while reading the Herald? Then, maybe I can help you out. You need my new recession eraser: Mr. Larry Sortwell. Hobgoblin on glitar, menace to the Muses, and snake oil singer. This guy is something else, and a truly wonderful cat to work with, too. But don’t just believe me, czech it out for yooself. You’ll throw those razor blades away for good , this time.
Pushing good ol’ L-man over the top will be Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer, a fugitive from these parts since he caught the Katy. Be good to see him, for a change. And, of course, Greg “Whammy Bar” Tower  and myself will be there too. You’ll never be the same. Don’t ever change.

Heritage Center Hosts SEASCAPE

Two day festival features music, storytelling, dance and art

SEASCAPE.  The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center is proud to present SEASCAPE on July 24th and 25th. This 2-day festival celebrates Gloucester’s relationship with the sea through music, dance, storytelling and the visual arts.  SEASCAPE is produced with grant funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Commission, and the McCarthy Family Foundation.

Beginning at 10 am on Saturday, a lively schedule of workshops and concerts will explore the cultural impact of Gloucester’s distinction as the oldest seaport in America. Featured performers include David Coffin, story teller Jay O’Callahan, Sea Shanty singers The Johnson Girls, singer Ken Sweeney, and native American musician Strong Eagle Daly. The performers will conduct a series of 50-minute long concert/workshops on both Saturday and Sunday, providing the public with opportunities to learn from experienced performers.

Workshops are open to visitors of all ages, with the exception of the Saturday 11 a.m. workshop with Jay O’Callahan, which is limited to 25 participants 15 years old on up.

Throughout the day on Saturday, master batik artist Mary Edna Fraser will facilitate the making of a 3’ x 10’ community banner. Participants will draw in wax and paint with dyes on silk as they add to a banner which will serve as the backdrop for the Saturday evening concert.  Younger children will use crayons and water colors to have a similar experience while creating projects to take home. On Sunday, all participants will make small pieces to take home.

On Saturday evening at 7 pm, all performers will gather for a three hour long concert under the Heritage Center’s tent overlooking Gloucester Harbor. They will perform both individually and together, creating a lively night filled with music and stories. Students from the Cape Ann Center for Dance will perform a piece of choreography commissioned specifically for SEASCAPE, set to an arrangement by David Coffin of a popular “fishing” lullaby.

The festival continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a second series of concert/workshops. There will also be a 3 p.m. concert bringing together all participating musicians in one long collaborative set.
Children’s activities and refreshments will be available throughout both days of the festival.

All of the daytime concert/workshops are free of charge. The same goes for the Sunday finale concert. Tickets to the Saturday night concert are $15 ($7 for kids 14 and under) and are available at the Heritage Center, in advance and at the door.

The Performers
David Coffin, who lives in East Gloucester, has performed throughout New England for the past thirty years.  While his venues include concert halls, festivals, coffeehouses, and museums; he is most often found performing one of his two school enrichment programs throughout New England. He has also performed with the Cambridge-based Revels since 1980 as a singer, instrumentalist and, since 1991, as Master of Ceremonies.
At the heart of David’s work is traditional and contemporary folk music, including an extensive collection of songs from the Maritime tradition. Widely know for his rich baritone voice, his impressive collection of musical instruments includes concertinas, recorders, penny-whistles, bombards (loud Breton double reeds), gemshorns, cornamuse, shawms, and rauschphieffes.
Jay O’Callahan is one of the world’s best-known storytellers. He has performed at Lincoln Center, at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and other theatres around the world, at the Olympics, and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His work appears regularly on National Public Radio. In addition to creating and performing stories, he leads workshops on storytelling and writing.
Jay was commissioned by NASA to create a story in celebration of the agency’s 50th anniversary in 2008. The National Association of Independent Record Distributors and Manufacturers awarded first prize to the High Windy recording of his story, “The Boy Who Loved Frogs.”
The Johnson Girls is an energetic all-woman mostly a cappella group performing folk music with an emphasis on songs of the sea and shore.  Each member (Joy Bennet, Alison Kelley, Bonnie Milner, and Deirdra Murtha) of the group brings a specialty and style to the ensemble.  The Johnson Girls’ extensive repertoire of both traditional and contemporary music includes songs with an Afro-Caribbean influence, of the inland waterways, of fishing, mining, Irish, Anglo-American, Italian and French Canadian ballads and work songs, and much more.  With a sound that has been called “exciting”, “haunting”, “uplifting”, and “full of harmony”, the Johnson Girls give “hair-raising” performances of powerhouse chanteys, tender ballads and just plain fun songs, bringing audiences to their feet wherever they go.
Ken Sweeney performs mountain ballads, old time songs and sea music. A top notch player of the clawhammer banjo, English concertina, and harmonica, he also makes music playing spoons. He is a former member of the infamous Mystic Seaport Chanteymen.
Strong Eagle Daly, of the Nipmuc nation, handcrafts the flutes he plays. Each of Daly’s flutes contain a hand carved animal which faces the performer. He says that “in addition to the animals, the spirit of tree resonates through the flute as I breathe new life through it and give it a new voice.” Through Daly’s observation of different flute players and their varying techniques, he has created his own improvisational style and voice. He fills empty space with the haunting and inspirational sounds that come from the various woods and octaves of his flute.
Mary Edna Fraser is an internationally known textile artist who collaborates with scientists from a variety of disciplines to illustrate the changing environment. She researches her landscapes by hiking the terrain, exploring the waterways by boat, and by taking aerial photos from the open cockpit of her grandfather’s 1946 Ercoupe plane. She also uses satellite images and maps to plan her expansive compositions, which take the form of huge batiks. In 1994, she was the first woman to be honored with a one person textile exhibition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
Mary Edna’s work has been included in exhibits at many museums and organizations including the National Academy of Sciences, the New England Aquarium, Mystic Seaport , North Carolina Maritime Museum, and the Duke University Museum of Art.

Thank you to Dan King for hosting
this and to Fred Shrigley
for making it possible.

A few words from Mr Dave Sags:
Whoo, boy, another big load this week, so let’s get goin’!
This Thursday at the Rumpline I’m proud to present Mr. Andrew Clark, the tootin’ Torquemada of the tenor, who’ll be bringin’ his whole schtick with him, I hope. He sings!  He honks! and he rearranges molecules of familiar songs into  totally new configurations, bedazzling both the listener and confused musicians alike.
Blacking him up will be that glitar Svengali, Mr. Greg Tower, and Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett on the drumbulators. And me, too.
Friday nite sees the triumphant return of the”Geezerz” at the Studio Restaurant, if we can find the place. For you unformed nim buses, that’s Dave Brown, systolic swami of slide, Greg tower (again, no intro needed), and myselph. Unfortunately, our glue-like drummer, Dave Mattacks, isrecovering from a bizarre foot- pedal accident, so Frosty will be on hand , again.Do come! hours 9 to 12:30
Sunday I’m back at Glenn’s Cool Bar, in Nbpt., with the Justin Quinn Band from 6 to 9. Best restaurant around, but I;m sick of tellin’ ya cuz nobody from Globster ever comes. it’s over the bridge!! And you’re over the hill!
And finally ,on Monday, The Old Salty’s will be struttin’ their stuff at the Rose Baker Senior Center from 1 to 3 pm. All you unemployed fans oughta  come on down. Free bingo , too.

Friday – 9:30 to 12:30 ~ Kingsley Flood

I am so excited to see that Kingsley Flood is back in Gloucester at The Rhumb Line. They rule!

Check out this article. Seems like these guys are appearing in print a lot these days. Love it.

Thursday -8:00 – close ~ Greg Lutrell:
Greg Luttrell is a singer & guitarist from Detroit, MI who relocated to Boston and gets around doing performances of all kinds of feel good music. Whether performing with one of many bands or as a solo act, Greg’s energy and delivery are a unique experience. Luttrell is an outstanding guitar player and his voice has been likened to Marvin Gaye, Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Brad Nowell. He honed his skills playing in blues and cover bands in the 90s and formed his own funk and soul band, Michigan Blacksnake who released Michigan Blacksnake(1997) and the road at a breakneck pace.  They were nominated for a Boston Music Award as Best Funk Band in 2000  and continued playing concerts and festivals for the next three years. They shortened the name to Blacksnake and released Mind Over Matter(2004) and played 200+ shows that year and for years after all over the US and in the Caribbean. In between runs with his bands, Greg has thrilled crowds from NY to LA with his solo acoustic performances. With a song list topping 400 tunes and a deep knowledge of genres, there’s almost no crowd he can’t jam with.  He formed his own band again in 2005, the Greg Luttrell Band, a full band version of his acoustic act where genres blend seamlessly and songs evolve every night for whatever kind of party is happening. Check out more at

Friday 8:30 to close ~ John Jerome:
Gloucester’s own John Jerome has been one of the best acts across Gloucester hands down! He is well known for his talents playing along with his brother and has many reasons to be so well thought of. He has played at pretty much every local spot that plays music in town and many more. He plays a nice mix of cover songs and some of his own original music and can wow you with either.

Regina Carter.

Due to popular demand, Rockport Music is thrilled to announce a second performance by violinist Regina Carter on Saturday, July 24 at 5 p.m. Called “enormously gifted” by the New York Times and described by the Los Angeles Times as a “talented, charismatic player who is almost single-handedly reviving interest in the violin as a jazz instrument,” Regina Carter will play a 75-minute set without intermission at 5 p.m. She will perform at the Shalin Liu Performance Center a second time that evening at 8 p.m. Although the 8 p.m. performance is sold out, last-minute tickets may become available.

Ms. Carter will be performing works from her new album Reverse Thread, an innovative and eclectic mixing of jazz and African folk melodies performed by a band of preeminent musicians on a variety of instruments, from Ms. Carter’s violin to the accordion to the African kora.

Read a review of a recent performance of Reverse Thread by the New York Times, and hear another performance by Ms. Carter and her band in the studio at NPR.

Susan Slovick, violin.
Thank you to Dan King for hosting
this and to Fred Shrigley
for making it possible.

Thursday -8:00 – close ~ Ten Foot Polecats

Ten Foot Polecats are a punk blues band with their deep roots drawn from the North Mississippi Hill Country.  Even though they are basically in their sophomore season, they have made quite an impression on the National and local music scenes as they are currently one of the few blues based bands booked across the region in the rock, blues, punk, rockabilly and psychobilly circuits.  They have also been recently signed to the Hillgrass Bluebilly Record Label out of Austin, Texas. Known as a record label that is at the forefront of the raw & primal roots revolution movement, Hillgrass Bluebilly, and Ten Foot Polecats seem like a perfect match.
Nationally, Ten Foot Polecats have been showcased at the 2009 Deep Blues Festival in Minnesota, The 2008 & 2009 Keene Music Festival in New Hampshire, the 2008 Boston Music Festival, and are scheduled to appear in the 2010 Muddy Roots Festival in Nashville, Tennessee and 2010 Heavy Rebel Weekender in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  They have also toured the United States in 2008 & 2009 and played venues from New York City to Seattle and have shared the stage with such nationally known acts as T-Model Ford, Kenny Brown, Kent Burnside and The New Generation, Bob Margolin, Wayne Hancock, Billy Joe Shaver, Black Diamond Heavies, Left Lane Cruiser, Cedell Davis, The Scissormen, Robert Cage, Elmo Williams, The Goddamn Gallows, Sasquatch & The Sickabillys, The Koffin Kats, and more.
“There ain’t a lotta scrappy-ass electric juke-joint blues comin’ outta Allston (Massachusetts), but this dirty trio’s first full-length album makes it seems that the Charles River is a direct tributary of the Mississippi as The Ten Foot Polecats add muscle, blood, and heart to a genre in need of all three.”
– Ted Drozdowski,  Boston Phoenix

Friday 8:30 to close ~ Ryan Fardy:

At 24 years old, Ryan Fardy has had a fantastic start to his 9-year career.  He has played to crowds all over New England and the United States (Las Vegas, California, Florida…etc), and even Canada.  He has opened for the legendary Chaka Khan, Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Mountain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Derringer, Hoobastank, and more.  He was also the featured cover story for Boston Blues Magazine at the age of 18. With an upbringing on the Boston Area blues scene, Ryan has created his own genre, mixing Blues, Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul, and Pop.  He is striving to make his songwriting ability known even though he still holds the “guitarslinger” tag throughout the Boston area.  His shows combine the inventiveness of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, the passion of Eric Clapton, and the on stage intensity of Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Audiences typically find themselves in awe of his command of the guitar and of the stage, and have trouble believing that they are witnessing the talents of someone so young.  However, they don’t have any trouble believing that they are seeing a performer who has a very bright future.
