Rockport New Year’s Eve (RNYE) is a family-friendly year-end celebration of the arts held in downtown Rockport, Massachusetts annually since 1997. Halls, churches, town offices, and some streets are taken over by happy revelers celebrating the New Year.
Throughout the year, RNYE keeps friends informed of ongoing activities and events via an email list. Emails are occasional and include news and informative articles about our performers and events. Please sign up below if you are interested.
A primary goal of RNYE is to keep this event affordable for everyone. Purchase of a button provides entrance into all of the events on New Year’s Eve. But the revenue generated from button sales does not cover the cost of this event and RNYE relies heavily on sponsors and donations. Please donate below if you are inspired to help. RNYE appreciates your generosity and community spirit!RNYE also sincerely thanks its many volunteers, without whom this event could not go on!
~
About RNYE
Midnight Ball Drop from fire truck
The mission of Rockport New Year’s Eve (RNYE) is to broaden and deepen the public’s appreciation for the performing, literary, and visual arts through innovative, diverse and high-quality programs that offer the community a shared cultural experience that is accessible and affordable. RNYE presents year-round programs that both support this mission and raise funds. RNYE is also supported by business sponsorships and individual donations.
RNYE’s most important event of the year, and the one for which the organization is named, is the celebration of the arts on New Year’s Eve. The evening is designed to be an impressive, “small seacoast town” version of First Night celebrations held throughout the country. New Year’s Eve in Rockport is a treasured tradition enjoyed by Cape Ann residents and visitors
Attendees purchase buttons online or at stores throughout Rockport and Gloucester in advance of New Year’s Eve, or at the event headquarters on New Year’s Eve. A button allows the bearer to attend any events that are scheduled throughout the evening. The following description gives a good perspective of the depth, breadth and cultural diversity of the entertainment.
The celebration begins at 6PM on New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve entertainment is scheduled on the hour, every hour, from 6PM to midnight, with 15 minute breaks in between each 45 minute session to allow attendees to walk from venue to venue and venue managers to reset for the next act. The entertainment options scheduled throughout the evening are culturally diverse and suitable for all ages. Musical acts may include folk, Celtic, blues, reggae, calypso, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, funk, soul, bagpipes, gospel, songs of the sea, 50’s and 60’s doo wop, country, western swing, African pop, New Orleans jazz, big band, and a cappella.. Other entertainment may include clowns, jugglers, puppeteers, story tellers, face painters, dancers, psychic readers, and telescope viewing with the astronomy club. Children of all ages participate in the drum jam and parade through the downtown streets, with a large dancing dragon and costumes. At midnight, attendees gather in Dock Square to watch the ball drop from the highest ladder of the town fire truck and sing “Auld Lang Syne”.
Chelsea Berry: Saturday, December 14, 2019. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., performance begins as 7 p.m. $30 ticket. Chelsea Berry is a singer-songwriter with the edge, power, and finesse of legends. Singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor calls her vocals “world class” and says of Berry, “A voice of remarkable power and control with a joyous soul. Brave and bright, Chelsea Berry is the real thing.” A favorite among venue owners up and down the East coast, Berry’s beautiful voice and commanding stage presence has brought her across the U.S. as regular support for Livingston and others as well as headliner of her own shows. Born and raised in Alaska, she now makes her home in Essex, MA.
Her music transcends its indie rock roots and touches listeners with its poetic lyric, bold melodies, and pure, clear, powerful vocals. Singer/songwriter Chris Smither says Berry is “..Great, talented, beautiful … her future is so bright you’re gonna have to wear shades.”
Berry has appeared on the cover of Boston magazines such as The Noise and Northshore Magazine. Her presence has been described by listeners as “compelling… she draws the entire house into her world like moths to a flame.” As a vocalist and performer, she evokes the style of artists such as Cheryl Crow, Eva Cassidy, KD Lang, and Melissa Etheridge.
On Tuesday, September 10th, the wait will be over….The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor.
The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award-winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights and a protest against misogyny and oppression. Live from the London stage, Atwood will be interviewed by broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.
‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’
With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable and intimate event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect. The Testaments will be published by Vintage on 10 September.
7 guys. Multiple ways of making music using only their voices. What they do is far more than a cappella. They are a band without a band.
Having met in school and gospel choir they quickly discovered that they were doing more than just singing songs, they all discovered perfect hypervocal capabilities. That’s why Naturally 7 call their music “vocal play.” Every band member has his preferred style, or favorite songs and together they can interpret them all. Naturally 7 summon up soul, rap, rock and folk in one harmonious balance.
“Naturally 7 croons like a choir of angels, but they can also simulate a full orchestra or a pop-rock band…using just their voices.”
Nowadays they have famous fans such as Michael Bublé (whom they joined on 3 world tours), Coldpay (“Fix You” is one of the finest adaptions of music you can imagine), Quincy Jones (who called them “best a cappella band worldwide”), Herbie Hancock (listen to their H. Hancock medley) and many others.
Their repertoire is a mix of their own compositions and cover versions.
This year they are celebrating their 20th anniversary which will be accompanied by new releases and remixes of famous hits (such as “Wall of Sound”). They happily participated in CBS’ new TV format World’s Best which will air from February to April 2019. And of course: they tour around the world!
Naturally 7 are: “Ricky“ Lee Ricardo Cort Rod Eldridge Kelvin “Kelz“ Mitchell Sean Simmonds Dwight Stewart Roger Thomas Warren Thomas
Join us for dinner with the Warsi-Olsen jazz duo — Sahil Warsi on double bass and Alec Olsen on keyboard. Their music includes selections from the Great American Song Book, modern jazz, contemporary blues and R&B.
Join us for a special brunch featuring Ipswich-based guitarist Harry Wagg. Harry will be performing a variety of traditional jazz, contemporary classics and original tunes, all arranged for solo guitar.
